AUCD signed onto a letter urging members of Congress to oppose any balanced budget amendment to the United States Constitution. Such an amendment would require massive cuts to ensure that the budget remained balanced, and would permanently slash funding for a massive array of initiatives that affect all Americans, including Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, SSDI, veterans' benefits, scientific research, and public education. Additionally, analysts estimate that a balanced budget amendment would also have significant damaging effects for the economy, resulting in increased unemployment and recession. The letter, which was originally drafted in 2011, has been signed by 281 organizations amid increased support for a balanced budget amendment among Senate Republicans and in state legislatures.
