Project Summary:

Improve the training of fellows and residents by enhancing their collaboration with family navigators as partners in care, an important step toward better meeting the unique support needs of children with developmental disabilities and their families.

Objectives Accomplished:

  • Added an experienced family navigator to the center's clinical DBP team; developed a job description and included this individual in regular core trainee seminars and case discussion with faculty
  • Provided real-time support and education (including a compilation of readily available resources) specific to the needs of families receiving a new diagnosis for their child with ASD or another developmental disability, as well as teens with ASD and their families that are transitioning to new systems of care
  • Developed of process for referral to the Rhode Island Parent Information Network (RIPIN) and Rhode Island's UCEDD (the Paul V. Sherlock Center) for all interested families
  • Developed a collaborative relationship between the center's DBP service and RIPIN to provide ongoing wraparound supports for families
