Prevalence of Autism Statement

The National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) recent data release shows the prevalence of autism is 1 in 45 among children aged 3-17 years. In 2014, estimates from the Autism and Developmental Disabilities Monitoring (ADDM) Network showed that 1 in 68 children 8 years of age have autism. Together these findings indicate that the number of children who currently have autism, or the prevalence, may be increasing in the United States.
The Association of University Centers on Disabilities (AUCD) values the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's continued tracking and monitoring of autism. These data provide evidence for the need for readily available, high quality medical, educational, and community support services for children, youth, and adults with autism and their families. The AUCD network of university disability centers, professional leadership programs, and research centers are working with advocates and federal partners to improve access and availability to evidence-based services and to ensure equal access to those services.
