AUCD's Public Health is for Everyone, www.phetoolkit.org, is highlighted in the October 2015 edition of "Nation's Health," a newsletter for members of the American Public Health Association. Public Health is for Everyone, an inclusive planning toolkit for public health professionals. AUCD staff Adriane Griffen, and Abigail Alberico were interviewed and discussed the award winning resource. APHA Members can access the full article here.

Diagnostic Experiences of Children with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder
This report from the September CDC National Health Statistics Report describes the diagnostic experiences of children in the United States diagnosed with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). According to data from NS-DATA, the median age at ADHD diagnosis was 7 years. About one in three children was diagnosed before age 6-an age at which there are few valid diagnostic tools to support diagnosis. The age at diagnosis was related to the type of diagnosing provider. National Disability Navigator Resource Collaborative (NDNRC) Receives 3 Year Funding
NDNRC will be receiving Year 3 Funding from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. The American Association on Health and Disability (AAHD) www.aahd.us established the Affordable Care Act (ACA) National Disability Navigator Resource Collaborative (NDNRC) in order to assist the development of cross-disability competence in ACA CMS funded navigator programs and other enrollment specialists. The NDNRC aims to provide the information needed to help navigators assist people with disabilities consider all these options. The collaborative is funded through a grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (www.rwjf.org). The NDNRC website can be found at: www.nationaldisabilitynavigator.org
AUCD Participates in Assistive Technology Campaign
AUCD and other disability associations and professionals came together to raise awareness and spread knowledge on the possibilities available to those in need of assistive technology, while highlighting the innovations happening in the industry at the MediaplanetUSA "Assistive Tech" campaign. The campaign was distributed within the centerfold of USA Today on September 25, 2015 and is published on a Mediaplanet original site.

Some of the Biggest Problems Sometimes Have the Simplest Solutions
CDC's Your Health-Your Environment Blog has a posting on the Surgeon Generals Call to Action to Promote Walking and Walkable Communities. The Call to Action is a simple solution to a complex idea. AUCD's new Oral and Dental Health Community of Practice has begun work on two goals:
1. Sharing information/Training promotion (day to day priority) 2. Policy changes related to Medicaid coverage (explore making essential health benefit in exchanges) (long term goal)

New AUCD Public Health Program Manager

In October Shannon Haworth joined the AUCD Public Health Team as the Public Health Program Manager. Her primary role will be managing Including People with Disabilities - Public Health Workforce Competencies in partnership with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). This project will create competencies for public health professionals that will increase their capacity to include people with disabilities in public health program development and planning. Shannon most recently worked as the Senior Program Specialist on the LEND team at AUCD.

Healthy Living for All: How Sixby'15 Campaign Works to Include People with Disabilities in Public Health

Coalition strategies and political strategies are currently being used to encourage six states to adopt a policy of including PWD in state public health efforts by the end of 2015. Examples of how campaign partners are taking action on this goal from New York, Florida, Massachusetts, Iowa, Rhode Island, Ohio, Delaware, and Michigan will be shared. National resources from AUCD and local examples and resources from the campaign partner, the National Association of City County Health Officials will be highlighted.

Disability and Health Value: A Multistate Medicaid Data Analysis Collaboration

This project identifies people with intellectual disability covered by Medicaid in each of these five states, characterizes the leading health issues that these Medicaid recipients experience, and identifies opportunities to improve the health/wellness of these Medicaid beneficiaries.

The 2015 APHA Disability Section Chair's Forum
The Americans with Disabilities Act was signed into law in 1990, providing broad civil rights and protections to the nearly 57 million Americans who have a disability, as well as those who are perceived as having a disability. In the twenty-five years since the passage of the ADA, much has been accomplished to break down barriers to full participation of people with disabilities in society, but many hurdles still remain. Join APHA for an exciting panel of presentations reflecting on ways the ADA has impacted the health of people with disabilities and discussing future directions for fulfilling the promise of the ADA and maximizing the health and well-being of people with disabilities.
