TRIAD Service AmeriCorps program returns to Mississippi UCEDD
October 31, 2014
"Everybody can be great because anybody can serve." -Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
The Training Resources and Information for the Advancement of Disability (TRIAD) Service AmeriCorps Program embodies Dr. King's statement through inclusive service. TRIAD Service AmeriCorps consists of members both with and without disabilities who serve local communities through the provision of education and resources.
The TRIAD Service AmeriCorps Program is housed at the Institute for Disability Studies (IDS) at The University of Southern Mississippi. The program, which is funded through the Mississippi Commission of Volunteer Service, originated in 2011, continued through 2012, and is resuming service in 2014.
Full-time TRIAD Service AmeriCorps member Cherish Ducksworth says, "The goal of our program is to educate young adults with disabilities about smart money management and assist them in accessing the best resources to ensure they can be financially independent if that is something they want." The TRIAD Service AmeriCorps Program promotes empowering all people with the skills they need to be successful in whatever activities they want to achieve.
Taylor Carley, another TRIAD Service AmeriCorps member, lives by the motto "a disability isn't that at all, it is an ability." With excitement for this new year of service, Carley explains the importance of the program: "We are going to learn about how to be independent when managing our money so we can teach other people those same skills as well. I want to be able to care for myself one day and AmeriCorps gives me the chance to learn how to do that while serving others."
