Intended Audience
The following health equity trainings are available to LEND, DBP, and UCEDD faculty, staff, and leadership. The max capacity for each training date is 40 participants. Trainings are on a first-come, first-served basis. For questions, please contact Jeanette Córdova at [email protected]. The registration deadline is Friday, August 5, 2022.

Structural Competence and Cultural Humility to Address Disparities and Inequities: A Foundational Health Equity Training
Learning Outcomes
- Demonstrate increased self-awareness of racial, ethnic, and class biases.
- Define cultural and linguistic competency and indicate familiarity with the stages of cultural competency (or continuum).
- Describe the implications of demographic trends for health disparities.
- Identify links between racial and health inequities and health disparities.
- Integrate National CLAS Standards into practice and service providing.
- Describe how cultural beliefs shape clinical encounters and patients' health outcomes.
- Incorporate structural competence and cultural humility into service provision.

Provider Bias Awareness Training to Address Disparities and Inequities
Learning Outcomes
- Recognize one’s personal biases; and identify three impacts of biases, one each in the health/social services workplace, patients, and communities.
- Distinguish/differentiate between diversity, inclusion, equity, and equality.
- Summarize two ways that racial biases and microaggressions affect behavior, interactions, and health outcomes and perpetuate health inequities.
- Identify the impact of biases in non-health systems, such as education, housing, and criminal justice.
- Identify two methods to reduce biases using Social Determinants of Health and National CLAS Standards frameworks.

Maria Mercedes Avila, Ph.D., MSW, MED provides consultation and training on Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Justice and has trained more than 7500 providers across 27 states and 150+ organizations (hospitals, community health centers, departments of health and mental health, mental health and disability agencies, family and youth-serving organizations, higher education institutions, and schools). Since 2011, Dr. Avila has been invited to lead 48 national presentations and 100+ regional sessions on topics related to National CLAS Standards, health disparities, social justice in health care, culturally responsive care and practice, social determinants of health, health and racial equity, and cultural competence in advocacy and leadership. Dr. Avila has received 14 service, training, and research awards for her work on health equity.

Please choose a maximum of ONE date in August and ONE date in September when you register. Registration will close on Friday, August 5, 2022.
