Webinar Description:

This webinar will offer interested potential applicants an opportunity to interact with the AUCD Leadership Academy faculty. The webinar will feature a brief overview of the 2022 Academy curriculum and timeline. This will be followed by a time for questions from potential applicants to the 2022 AUCD Leadership Academy. In addition, alumni will share their reflections about the benefits they gained from participation in the week-long academy. and the follow-up activities. 

Webinar Presenters:

White woman with dark brown hair smiling at the camera wearing a gray jacketEmily Graybill is the associate director of the Center for Leadership in Disability at the School of Public Health at Georgia State University.  Her specific interests include delivery of training and technical assistance to schools and community agencies related to individualized positive behavior support, evaluating the implementation and sustainability of educational initiatives for underserved populations, including youth with disabilities. Dr. Graybill’s recent work focuses on supporting schools to build an infrastructure for universal mental health screening. 

Dr. Graybill serves as an internal program evaluator and a course director for the Mark Chaffin Center for Healthy Development-funded Georgia Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental Disabilities Program (GaLEND) at Georgia State.  Dr. Graybill leads the GaLEND activities related to universal design for learning.

Mark brings a passion for training emerging leaders with and without disabilities to work for more responsive and more just systems. He holds a Master of Theological Studies from the Candler School of Theology at Emory University. Mark was also a member of the 2020 Class of the Susan M. Daniels Disability Mentoring Hall of Fame. Mark’s specific interests include the incorporation of mindfulness in the formation of leaders and working to make congregations and community spaces more welcoming of the gifts, skills, and abilities of people with disabilities.

Williams, PhD, MPA is the director of the Center for Learning and Leadership/UCEDD and Vice Provost for Academic Affairs and Faculty Development at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center. In 1990, Valerie founded the organization known today as the Center for Learning and Leadership/Oklahoma UCEDD. In 1992, the Center first received federal funding and the team began work in earnest. Today, Valerie is a University of Oklahoma Presidential Professor whose main interests are social justice and helping people find and use their talents for the greatest impact. She is an advocate for teamwork, shared learning and practice, and finding your voice. Valerie is a faculty member in three Health Sciences Center colleges (graduate, medicine, and public health) and she teaches about how to find your voice both locally and nationally. She earned her master’s degree in public administration at Syracuse University and her doctoral degree at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center.

What is the AUCD Leadership Academy?

The Academy includes an online intensive experience that lasts one week. The intensive experience means that participants will meet daily for one week. During this experience, program participants will:

  • share their experiences with each other; 
  • focus on developing their skills; work with other Academy participants, staff, local coaches, and national allies in virtual meetings; 
  • focus on exploring shared values; 
  • focus on a shared commitment to civil and human rights; 
  • look at their strengths and skills as leaders; and 
  • make personal and professional leadership goals.

When will the AUCD Leadership Academy take place?

The dates for the week-long intensive will be Monday, June 20th through Friday, June 24th. The online intensive will meet via Zoom from 11:30 am through 5:00 pm (EST) and will include multiple breaks. (Each day will begin with an optional opportunity for mindfulness/meditation at 11:00 am EST).

There will also be six (6) pre-Academy webinars. These will take place before the week-long, online intensive experience. The webinars introduce important leadership themes. They also help Academy participants and faculty get to know each other. The dates and times for the webinars are to be determined. 

Who should apply?

People who work with UCEDDs, LENDS, and other partner organizations are welcome to apply. Past academy participants have included people who have done the following jobs:

  • Self-Advocacy Coordinator 
  • LEND trainees and faculty 
  • UCEDD trainees and faculty 
  • Program Coordinator 
  • Research Assistant 
  • Director/Associate Director 
  • Occupational Therapist 
  • Parent Educator 
  • Psychologist
