Event Description:

The LFDN, with support from AUCD’s Interdisciplinary Technical Assistance Center (ITAC) on Autism and Developmental Disabilities, is hosting a series of facilitated workshops and conversations for leaders and trainees in the field of Family Support to discuss critical questions and share best practices for addressing equity for families within their programs and in life beyond their traineeship. 

The Summit is free to attend. A final agenda will be available by the beginning of September. Event materials will be shared one week before the event. 

*The last 30 minutes of Day 1 will be optional networking time for LFDN members only. The last 30 minutes of Day 2 will be optional networking time for all Summit participants.

By the end of the Family Discipline Summit, attendees will: 

  • Understand/recognize the value of family as a professional discipline.
  • Strengthen and energize existing connections within the LFDN.
  • Foster new relationships with Family Support professionals outside of the LFDN. 

Goals of the Family Discipline Summit:

  • Introduce the history and goals of the LEND family discipline. 
  • Network within and across disciplines by fostering a collaborative environment. 
  • Enhance opportunities for providing and receiving mentorship within the family discipline. 
  • Continue to develop and refine relevant family resources. 
  • Share best practices and identify opportunities for growth in the family discipline.

Who should attend?

The 2021 Family Discipline Summit welcomes network members in the LFDN and Family Support Special Interest Group (SIG), current and former LEND trainees in the family discipline, and Program and Training Directors from MCHB Training Programs.

Where is the Summit taking place?

This event will be held over Zoom. Attendees must register for Day 1 and Day 2 separately. 

Workshop Facilitators

Stephanie Coleman is the Autism and Family Educator for the division of Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics at the University of Kansas Medical Center. She supports families after an autism diagnosis while working with community partners in understanding and developing ways to support individuals and their families in the disability community. Stephanie is also the Kansas LEND Family Faculty mentoring and supporting family trainees as they grow their leadership and advocacy skills. Her passion to do more in the autism community started with her son, Matthew, a senior at the University of the Ozarks who was diagnosed relatively late in 2010 as being on the spectrum. Stephanie has worked since that time to advocate for him in every way to have the good life he envisions. In 2016, Matthew’s psychologist encouraged her to expand her advocacy and leadership knowledge to grow her reach and help other families in similar situations. From that day she has wanted to support and educate families to understand their child’s rights and the supports and resources that are there to assist them to attain the good life they envision as well.

Wanda Felty is the Community Leadership and Advocacy Coordinator for the Center for Learning and Leadership Oklahoma’s UCEDD and Family Faculty for the Oklahoma LEND program. She was the first long-term trainee from the Family Discipline for OKLEND. She serves on many state advisory boards and works to improve the system and services for people with developmental disabilities and their families. Wanda is considered one of Oklahoma’s leading experts on state policy for people with developmental disabilities.

 

 

 

 

Kristin Flott is the parent of a son with ASD and a daughter with SHCN. She has been working in the field of disabilities for over 15 years, not including several years of non-profit, community engagement and management experience. Since entering the field of neurodevelopmental disabilities, she has been dedicated to advocating and improving outcomes for children with disabilities and their families. She currently serves the Director of Campus and Community Collaboration as well as the LEND Family Faculty Director. In her roles, she coordinates with campus and community partners to develop collaborative training projects and experiences as well as provide direct support to LEND trainees through networking, mentoring and participation in interdisciplinary clinics.

Fran Goldfarb is the Family Support Discipline Director for CA-LEND as well as the Director of Community Education at the USC University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities Research, Education and Service at Children's Hospital Los Angeles (USC UCEDD CHLA). She chairs the LEND Family Discipline Network (LFDN) through AUCD and is the PI on the LEND Family Involvement Survey. Ms. Goldfarb has a bachelor's degree in Human Development and a master's degree in Social Science. She is credentialed as a Master Certified Health Education Specialist. She was also the first person in California credentialed as a Certified Parent Support Provider (FFCMH). Together with her husband, she founded and facilitates the Los Angeles Asperger Syndrome Parent Support Group. Most importantly, she is the parent of a young adult with a developmental disability and other psychiatric disabilities.

 

Tim Markle has worked at the UW-Madison Waisman Center for over 10 years. Currently he serves as the Director of the Southern Regional Center for Children and Youth with Special Health Care Needs, as well as an Outreach Specialist on the Youth Health Transition team. Tim works on developing curriculum for different audiences and loves presenting. He has a Masters in counseling from John Carroll University. He has two children (21 and 20), including a son on the autism spectrum

Angela Miney is the University of Florida Pediatric Pulmonary Center (PPC) Family Partner, a Maternal and Child Health Bureau funded program. She comes to this role as the parent of a young adult who has a chronic health condition. Angela has worked with leadership at UF Health to ensure the patient voice is incorporated into systems improvement from the bedside to the boardroom. She mentors students and faculty on patient and family centered care as part of the PPC's core curriculum. She has presented at both local and national conferences. Angela works collaboratively with the Family Partners in the other Pediatric Pulmonary Training programs around the country to develop a common family leader curriculum. She is the coordinator for the Florida Family Leader Network (https://floridaleaders.org), whose goals are to provide networking and training opportunities for family leaders. In 2021, Angela received the Association of Maternal and Child Health Programs (AMCHP) MERLE MCPHERSON FAMILY LEADERSHIP AWARD for exemplary contributions to further family/professional collaboration within state Title V programs and AMCHP.

 

 

Jonna Mulvaney, CCHW is the program coordinator at the Hasbro Children's Hospital. She also co-chairs the patient & family-centered care and family advisory councils at Hasbro Children's Hospital. Jonna is a 2015 family graduate of the Rhode Island LEND (RI-LEND) and serves as the Family Faculty Coordinator at the RI-LEND. Jonna is the mother of two adoptive children. At the age of 8, her son was diagnosed with autism. Since his diagnosis, Jonna has dedicated her life to helping him and other families of children with special healthcare needs.

 

 

 

 

 

Dori Ortman is Family Faculty with the LEND Center of Pittsburgh located at the University of Pittsburgh and supported by UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh. A highlight of Dori's work at LEND Pittsburgh has been her work on developing an inclusive curriculum for LEND Family and Advocacy Trainees that closely parallels the curriculum of their clinical peers. Dori is highly involved with the LEND Family Discipline Network on both the Steering Committee and also the "Life After LEND" committee, which focuses on assuring that LEND family trainees have opportunities to successfully evolve from their lived experiences to leadership development through LEND, to ultimately becoming change agents.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Mark Smith serves as Assistant Professor at the Munroe-Meyer Institute (MMI) located at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. Mark has served as a Family Faculty in the MMI LEND program since 2003 and helped develop the Family as a Discipline in the AUCD network, He remains active in the LEND Family Discipline Network and also co-chairs the AUCD Family Support Special Interest Group. At his center, he manages a number of projects and maintains a strong and active interest in Early Childhood Intervention.
