Webinar Description:

This panel of experts will describe the process used for recruitment and retention of diverse faculty and the challenges and barriers each faced throughout their experiences.

Learning Objective: 

  • Participants will examine diversity and inclusion through the lenses of representation, recruitment, retention, and development to support individuals from marginalized communities to grow and thrive within UCEDD, IDDRC, and LEND programs.

This is a webinar by AUCD's National Training Directors Council (NTDC).

Dr. Keisling is the Executive Director of the University of Tennessee’s Center for Developmental Disabilities (CDD) and holds the Shainberg Professorship in Developmental Pediatrics in the College of Medicine. He served on the AUCD board of directors from 2012-2019.

Christine Begay Vining
Christine Begay Vining, PhD., CCC-SLP is a bilingual Navajo Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) at the University of New Mexico, Center for Development & Disability. She received her bachelor and master’s degrees from the University of Arizona and doctorate in special education from the University of New Mexico. Currently, she provides clinical services, training, and technical assistance to support individuals with autism spectrum disorder and their families through the Autism and Other Developmental Disabilities Division. She is a faculty member in the NM Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental and Related Disabilities (LEND) program representing the speech-language pathology profession. Chris has worked with individuals with neurodevelopmental disabilities, their families, and communities throughout New Mexico in a variety of educational and clinical settings. As program manager, she has worked to improve systems of care and education with emphasis on rural, underserved areas including Native American communities. She continually works towards advancing diversity, equity and inclusion. She is senior advisor to the Native American Leadership Council for Speech-Language Pathologists and Audiologists, a constituency of American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA). In addition to other leadership roles at the local, state, and national levels, she served as president for the New Mexico Speech-Language Association ((NMSHA). She has served on national boards including the Executive Board of Council of State Association Presidents (CSAP), the Multicultural Issues Board of ASHA, the Association of University Centers on Disabilities (AUCD) Board of Directions, and the national Multicultural Council (MCC) of AUCD as co-chair. She is a Fellow of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association.

Derrick K. Willis, MPA
Derrick K. Willis, MPA, is the Director of Iowa’s University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (UCEDD), Center for Disabilities and Development (CDD), at the University of Iowa. Prior to joining CDD, Derrick served as Director of Urban Mission at the Institute for Human Development, Missouri’s UCEDD, at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. Derrick has over 35 years of experience in working at local not-for-profits, state government and higher education. Derrick’s career has centered on at-risk youth and families from diverse backgrounds living in urban communities. Since 2015, Derrick has been working nationally to implement policy changes related to diversity, equity and inclusion. Derrick currently serves as a Co-Chair for AUCD’s Multicultural Council and has been serving on the AUCD Board of Directors for three years. He is a past recipient of AUCD’s Multicultural Award for Leadership in Diversity and is a graduate of the National Leadership Consortium on Developmental Disabilities.
