Webinar Description:

The new fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) SIG invites you to join them for a review of resources that you might use in your work building or expanding your program of services and supports for individuals with FASD. Four studies funded by NIH found that 2-5% of first graders had an FASD but only 0.9% had been diagnosed. Persons with FASD are at increased risk of experiencing problems in school, being in the child welfare system, or being in the criminal justice system. However, with appropriate supports their life course can be dramatically different. The AUCD network has capacity to build on groundbreaking work taking place at UCEDDs and LENDs and become the national leader in this field.

In this webinar, members of the FASD SIG will present resources for increasing your knowledge about FASD, training others, and supporting individuals with lived experience and their families. Attendees are encouraged to share resources they find helpful. Following the presentation and discussion, participants will have a general conversation about strategies for building a strong network of programs serving individuals with FASD.

Presenters:

David Deer, MSW, MTh
David retired in 2020 as the director for Partners for Inclusive Communities (AR UCEDD) and training director for Arkansas Regional LEND. For 15 years, he worked on FASD projects funded by the CDC and SAMHSA. He currently serves as the co-director of the Specialty Diagnostic Resource Center, which is the first clinic and resource center in Arkansas devoted to children and adolescents suspected of having an FASD. He is a social worker by training and a retired member of the United Methodist clergy.

Elizabeth Cleveland, ABD, MS, CCC- SLP 
Elizabeth is a faculty member in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders at the University of Central Arkansas and her background is in speech-language pathology. She is the Co-Director of Training for the Arkansas Regional Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental Disabilities Program and is the Co-Director of the Specialty Diagnostic Resource Center, Arkansas's diagnostic and treatment clinic for fetal alcohol spectrum disorders. Her research focuses on cognition and executive functioning in children with FASD.

 

 

Leah Davies, LMSW
Leah is a Project Manager at the Texas Center for Disability Studies at The University of Texas at Austin. Leah's work centers on collaboration building and stakeholder engagement efforts, particularly related to Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders, as well as the special education system. Leah studied sociology, political science, and women's studies at Texas A&M University and received her Master's degree in Social Work from The University of Texas at Austin.

June Malachowski, LMSW
June is a research assistant at the Michigan Developmental Disabilities Institute at Wayne State University. For six years, she has worked on FASD projects with the Michigan FASD Taskforce and Michigan Coalition for Fetal Alcohol Resources, Education, and Support. She is the project coordinator for the Michigan National Core Indicators Adult In-Person Survey and the principle investigator for the Michigan Alliance for Families Consumer Satisfaction Survey.
