ATN/AIR-P Works in Progress Webinar: Genetic Testing

Tuesday, January 29, 2013
3:00pmET

Dr. Gail E Herman, MD/PhD, will discuss the role of genetics in the etiology of autism spectrum disorders (ASDs), as well as current recommendations for genetic testing in individuals with an ASD diagnosis. She will also briefly discuss exciting new research findings concerning genes involved in ASDs and new modes of genetic testing (whole exome and genome sequencing) that are rapidly entering the clinical arena. Dr. Herman is a board-certified clinical and biochemical geneticist and genetics specialist for the ATN at Nationwide Children's Hospital. She is also President-elect of the American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics.

The educational objectives for this webinar are as follows:

  1. Assess the evidence implicating genetics in the etiology of autism spectrum disorders
  2. Identify and order appropriate first tier genetic testing in individuals with an ASD and know when to refer for a genetic evaluation
  3. Identify the new genetic testing modalities of whole exome and whole genome sequencing and their potential role in ASD genetic diagnosis
