About the Webinar

This webinar discussed the leadership role that AUCD's network might consider in addressing web accessibility in their communities. Resources and opportunities were  discussed.

Dr. Cyndi Rowland is the Associate Director at the Center for Persons with Disabilities at Utah State University . She directs several grants that focus on the use of technology and the preparation of personnel. She is the Executive Director of WebAIM (Keeping Web Accessibility In Mind)which offers training, technical assistance, and services to make the Web a more accessible place for individuals who have disabilities. Dr. Rowland is extensively involved in the National Center for Disability and Access to Education where she is the Technology Director. She is the Principle Investigator of 2 federally funded projects. One explores issues of cognitive disability and Web design. This OSERS Steppingstones project is developing a suite of tools to add to the popular WAVE evaluator to assist in the evaluation of the cognitive load of a webpage. The other project is funded by FIPSE to develop self-study and other materials suitable for institutions of higher education and accreditation bodies to assist in the continuous improvement of their web accessibility efforts. Dr. Rowland chairs both the Website Committee and the International Committee at the Center for Persons with Disabilities. She is also the Director of KSAR, an award-winning media production facility (winner of 15 Telly Awards).

Jonathan B. Whiting, M.S. has been working with WebAIM since February 2003. His current position is Training and Website Evaluation Specialist. Jonathan has helped various organizations create a more accessible Web presence by providing on-site training, by evaluating the accessibility of their Web sites and by guiding them through the creation of a system-wide accessibility policy. He has also been invited to give presentations and workshops at internationally-attended conferences. Jonathan has written several articles and tutorials featured both on the WebAIM Web site and in their training guide. In 2004, he also supervised the design and development of the WebAIM Coordination and Leadership Training Event as well as the creation of the subsequent CD-ROM. Mr. Whiting received a Masters of Science in Instructional Technology from Utah State University and a Bachelors of Arts in Spanish from Brigham Young University. His professional interests include Universal Design for Learning (UDL), accessibility barriers for non-English speakers (including the Deaf), and the relationship between usability and accessibility on the Web. On a personal note, Jonathan enjoys spending time outside. During the summer, you will often find him riding his bike to and from work, and walking or playing in the park with his wife and children. Jonathan is also fluent in Spanish.
