AAIDD Research and Science Teleconference: Environmental Injustice: Focus on Pediatric Neurodevelopmental Disorders

Tuesday, March 11, 2008

AAIDD's Environmental Health Initiative is proud to announce the next teleconference in our Research and Science Teleconference series. Sponsored by the John Merck Fund; this event, "Environmental Injustice: Focus on Pediatric Neurodevelopmental Disorders," features Lawrence D. Rosen, MD, Chair, Integrative Pediatrics Council.

Teleconference Description

Environmental justice is defined as "the fair treatment and meaningful involvement of all people regardless of race, color, national origin, or income with respect to the development, implementation, and enforcement of environmental laws, regulations, and policies."  Injustice is done when health disparities exist based on these same factors.  We are witnessing a public health crisis of historical proportions that threatens the well-being of our children, with a growing number disproportionately suffering from environmentally-related diseases. Neurodevelopmental disorders affect one in six American children today, with autism and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) reported at all-time high rates. As neurodevelopmental disorders continue to be reported at epidemic rates, we are searching for environmental factors which may be contributing to the alarming rise.
