AAIDD Early Career Development Teleconference Series: Submitting a Successful NIH Grant Application

Organized by the AAIDD Committee on Student and Junior Member Recruitment and Retention. The Committee on Student and Junior Member Recruitment and Retention invites you to participate in our early career development teleconference series. As an important part of our committee's efforts to promote the recruitment and retention of AAIDD student and junior members, we continue to organize topical teleconferences focusing on the interests of AAIDD's student and junior members. Our next teleconference will be led by Dr. Brett Miller, Program Director of the Reading, Writing, & Related Learning Disabilities Research Program at the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development.

Description: In this session, Dr. Miller will provide a general overview of the NIH organizational structure, followed by a discussion of three specific grant opportunities: (a) dissertation research grants, (b) post-doctoral grants, and (c) early career research grants. Across the three grant opportunities, Dr. Miller will speak about the core elements required in a NIH grant application and strategies for writing a solid NIH grant application.

Speaker Biography: Brett Miller, PhD, is the Director of the Reading, Writing, and Related Learning Disabilities Program, which is part of the Child Development and Behavior Branch in the Center for Research for Mothers and Children, at the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD). This research program focuses on developing and supporting research and training initiatives to increase knowledge relevant to normal and atypical development of reading and written language skills in people across the life span. Before accepting this position at the NICHD, Brett Miller held the position of Associate Research Scientist at the Institute of Education Sciences, at the U.S. Dept. of Education. In this capacity, he served as program official for the National Center for the Study of Adult Learning and Literacy, the Mathematics and Science Education Research program, and co-program officer for the Cognition and Student Learning program.
