Emergency Management Conference Materials Available. On June 28-30, a conference sponsored by ADD and 9 other federal agencies, "Working Conference on Emergency Management and Individuals with Disabilities and the Elderly," was held in Washington, DC. Speakers included HHS Secretary Mike Leavitt, Department of Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff, FEMA Director David Paulson, ADD Commissioner Patricia Morrissey, HHS Office on Disability Director Margaret Giannini, Anthony Cahill (NM UCEDD), and Alexandra Enders (MT UCEDD). Twenty-six individuals from 24 UCEDDs were among the delegates and participants at the event, whose purpose was to bring together state teams of emergency management officials with key disability, aging, and health experts to facilitate cooperative planning, integrate emergency management efforts, and to strengthen regional and state capacity to assist individuals with disabilities and elders in an emergency. AUCD staff Dr. Maggie Nygren and Laura Walker served as note-takers at the event.
FY07 NIRS ROLL OUT - Save the Date. AUCD will host the FY07 NIRS Roll Out call on August 2, 2006 at 4:00 pm eastern. The call will last approximately one hour in length. The dial-in information is 800-820-4690; Pass Code: 1065613#. Materials for the call will be posted on the NIRS Resource Page on August 2, 2006. The changes for FY07 are largely usability enhancements; the data element changes are relatively minor. The FY07 version of NIRS will go live immediately after the call. The call will be recorded and information on how to access the recording of the call will be posted on the NIRS Resource Page on Thursday, August 3rd. Requesting Submissions for the September issue of AUCD LEND Links. Please send brief articles describing events, projects or accomplishments of trainees and faculty at your program that you would like to share with the network to Crystal Pariseau, LEND Program Coordinator, by August 18, 2006. LEND Links will also contain relevant resources, upcoming events and employment opportunities. Reflections by trainees or faculty on end-of-year or summer programs, as well as photos, are encouraged. AUCD Virtual Trainee Recruitment: AUCD is now taking applications for the 2006-2007 AUCD Virtual Trainee position. The Virtual Trainee is a link between the activities of the AUCD network and trainees across the country. The selected individual must be a UCEDD or LEND trainee in the coming year, have strong oral and written communication skills, be able to attend both the AUCD Annual Meeting and the Disability Policy Seminar, have an enthusiasm for AUCD, and be interested in building his/her own leadership skills. Please distribute the link and/or a paper copy of the announcement to all at your UCEDD and/or LEND who will be trainees in the coming year. Applications are due August 25, 2006.
Update: AUCD Annual Meeting Training Symposium: Preventing Violence Against People with Disabilities. The Training Symposium will bring two internationally recognized experts to examine the pathways that connect violence and disability, and the direct and indirect ways that disability increases vulnerability to violence. The presentations are research-based and include practical approaches to address this complex issue.
- Dr. Dick Sobsey (confirmed) is the Director of the JP Das Developmental Disabilities Centre and the John Dossetor Health Ethics Centre at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Canada. He has over 200 publications including his book, Violence and Abuse in the Lives of People with Disabilities. Dr. Sobsey also serves as a member of a United Nations advisory panel focused on violence against children.
- Dr. Patricia Sullivan (invited) has authored several research projects on the incidence, prevalence and effect of abuse upon children and adults with disabilities. Currently, Dr. Sullivan is a professor of neurology and psychology at Creighton University and recently received a $2.5 million grant from NIH to study the effects of exposure to violence on children with disabilities.
