Network-related Resources 

Technical Assistance on Native American Culture Project (TANAC).  The University of Montana Rural Institute (UCEDD) American Indian Disability Technical Assistance Center has been funded by the Social Security Administration to provide technical assistance to benefits planning, assistance and outreach programs that work with Native American SSA beneficiaries with disabilities.  The project serves 114 programs across the country.  For more information, contact the Center at 866-424-3822 or 406-243-4200 (TDD), or email [email protected].

“Access to Justice” film released by VA UCEDD.  With funding from the United States Department of Justice, the Partnership for People with Disabilities ( VA UCEDD) has produced a 25-minute film, “Access to Justice,” to assist judges and other professionals in the criminal justice system to understand the challenges faced by people with disabilities who are victims of domestic violence or sexual assault.  Copies of the film are available for $10 and can be ordered online through the UCEDD’s Products website or by contacting Molly Dellinger-Wray at 804-828-6926.

Early Childhood Transition Passport.
  The Paul V. Sherlock Center on Disabilities (RI UCCED) announces the availability of its newest publication, the Early Childhood Transition Passport. The Passport (6 pages, paperback) documents children’s likes and dislikes, favorite foods and activities, and things that affect their emotions and behavior. The Passport is designed to support families and their young children as they transition from one setting to another.

Early Intervention Specialist Program (EISP).  Starting June 2006, the A.J. Pappanikou Center for Developmental Disabilities (CT UCEDD) will be starting a new cohort of students for their online EISP. The course is aimed at increasing the number and quality of early interventionists serving infants and toddlers with disabilities and their families. New discussion board on self-determination funding.  The Beach Center , in association with the Kansas University Center on Developmental Disabilities (UCEDD), is hosting a national online discussion on the defining characteristics and terminology of self-determination.  To join the discussion, go to the Beach Center website. Beach Center staff will be analyzing the discussion postings for themes and defining characteristics. The results will be presented at the AAMR conference in Montreal , May 2-5, 2006.

Disability etiquette for kids.  The North Dakota Center for Persons with Disabilities (UCEDD) announces the availability of a new disability awareness CD entitled, “Ten Tips for Kids: Disability Etiquette.” This 10-minute video teaches elementary-aged students to communicate and interact positively with children who have disabilities. Philadelphia LEND website launched.  The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia LEND website was launched in February to provide information and resources for current and potential students, professionals and families interested in the LEND fellowship program.

Autism Research Findings:  Paul Shattuck, Ph.D., of the Waisman Center (UCEDD/LEND/DDRC) recently published findings from a study funded by NICHD in the Pediatrics Journal.   View the Data Provides Misleading Picture of Autism press release that provides a summary of the article, Autism epidemic doubted - But expert says tally of cases may be too low.


CDC Analysis: Emotional and Behavioral Difficulties and Impairments in Everyday Functioning Among Children with a History of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder.  This study documents the significant level of current emotional and behavioral difficulties and impairments in everyday functioning experienced by children with a history of ADHD diagnosis.

Research: Scientists Discover that Specific Gene Mutation May Help Spur Mental Retardation.  New research suggests that mutations in a specific gene, KCNC3, may cause neurodevelopmental disorders such as mental retardation and also drive neurodegenerative disorders such as spinocerebellar ataxias. The findings may eventually help lead to new treatments for Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease.

From the Capital to the Classroom - Year 4 of the No Child Left Behind Act.  The Center on Education Policy released its fourth annual report on the implementation of the No Child Left Behind Act.  The report is a comprehensive analysis of how the law is being implemented by the federal government, states, and school districts. 

An Overview of Alternative Education.  This Urban Institute report looks at policies and funding streams that help states and communities replicate and expand alternative learning opportunities for youth who are not in school, do not have a diploma, and are not working.

Questions and Answers on Serving Children With Disabilities Placed by Their Parents at Private Schools.  An online fact sheet from OSERS for school districts and parents about how the reauthorized Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) provides for students with disabilities enrolled by their parents in private elementary schools and secondary schools.

The Puzzle of Autism.  The National Education Association has published this guide to assist educators in their daily work with children with autism spectrum disorders.

ANCOR/DoL Business Relations Group Pilot Project Partnership: Tapping Into the Public Workforce Network. Report on one-year pilot projects in 4 states to develop model practices for accessing the resources of the public employment network--One Stops.   Based on progress and successes to date, the Department of Labor has made a commitment to expand this project to additional cities and states beyond the initial four locations.

Improved National Prevalence Estimates for 18 Selected Major Birth Defects: United States, 1999–2001  CDC report concludes Down syndrome is more common than previously thought.

Understanding Enrollment Trends and Participant Characteristics of the Medicaid Buy-In Program, 2003-2004. This Mathematica Policy Research report, the third in a series, offers a profile of the 28 states with both Buy-In programs and Medicaid Infrastructure Grants.

Health Guide for Adults with Spina Bifida.  The Spina Bifida Association of America has developed a new online manual, "Health Guide for Adults Living with Spina Bifida".  

Pulling Together: Administrative and Budget Consolidation of State Long-Term Care Services Summary.   This AARP Public Policy Institute Issue Paper examines a consolidated agency approach to long term care, reviews several states accomplishing consolidation, and provides a checklist of steps towards such a model. 

Everyone Can Serve: Stressing the Value of Volunteers with Disabilities.  A study conducted by the Points of Light Foundation touted the value of actively recruiting and including people with disabilities as active volunteers.  This follow-up report offers readers tips on increasing the number of people with disabilities in service, lessons learned through the study, and ways to change organizational policy and practice. 

Medicare Basics: A Guide for Families and Friends of People with Medicare.  This CMS booklet provides direct-to-consumer information needed to make or guide Medicare-related health care decisions.

UCP Report: New Hampshire Top Performer in Developing Medicaid Services to Persons with Developmental Disabilities while Texas Ranks Last.  A new report by United Cerebral Palsy (UCP) ranks state Medicaid services for persons with developmental disabilities.

Capitol Insider E-mail Bulletin.  The Arc and UCP's Disability Policy Collaboration invites you to sign on to receive the weekly Capitol Insider e-mail bulletin. The Advanced Medical Home: A Patient-Centered, Physician-Guided Model of Health Care.  This American College of Physicians policy monograph highlights some of the major problems with the health care system in the today and proposes a fundamental change in the way that primary care and principal care are delivered and financed.  

Creating Opportunities to Learn: A Forum for Addressing Disproportionality.  PowerPoint presentations from Creating Opportunities to Learn: A Forum for Addressing Disproportionality conference are now available on the Web. At the forum, 75 concurrent sessions focused on creating culturally responsive educational systems to eliminate the disproportionate representation of culturally and linguistically diverse students in special education.

PEPNet Perspectives.  PEPNet, the Postsecondary Education Programs Network for students who are deaf and hard of hearing, has published the first issue of its newsletter, PEPNet Perspectives..

ADHD Drugs & Cardiovascular Risk.  On February 9, the Drug Safety and Risk Management Advisory Committee of the FDA voted to recommend a “black-box” warning describing the cardiovascular risks of stimulant drugs used to treat ADHD.  In this New England Journal of Medicine, Dr. Steven Nissen explains why the advisory committee took decisive action. 

SISONLINE.  A web-based version of the Supports Intensity Scale (SIS), a needs-based planning tool developed by the American Association on Mental Retardation (AAMR), is now available to small practices of up to five persons as well as individual practitioners.  For pricing and further information, email [email protected].

Living with Brain Injury.  In recognition of Brain Injury Awareness Month (March), the Brain Injury Association of America offers educational kits to increase public awareness of brain injuries and their consequences and to address the needs of individuals living with brain injuries, their family members, and their caregivers.

Autism and Hope Conference Follow-up Report.  Conference proceedings on the nature of the challenges posed by autism, modern treatment methods, and national policy from a conference convened on December 16, 2005, by the Brookings Institution and The Help Group are now available.

National Council on Aging (NCOA) Model Program Toolkits. View evidence-based toolkits in health programming for older adults produced by the NCOA in the areas of physical activity, nutrition, depression, and diabetes self-management.

The HHS Office on Child Abuse and Neglect and the National Clearinghouse on Child Abuse and Neglect Information have developed a resource packet in English and Spanish for April, Child Abuse Prevention Month.  The 2006 community resource packet, Safe Children and Healthy Families Are a Shared Responsibility, contains material that organizations and individuals can use to help keep children safe in their communities—including information on getting the word out about the need to support families and tip sheets on positive parenting. The packet materials can be downloaded from the Clearinghouse website.

National Secondary Transition Technical Assistance Center (NSTTAC).
  The NSTTAC is a national Technical Assistance and Dissemination Center funded by the U.S. Department of Education Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP). NSTTAC helps states build their capacity to support and improve transition planning, services, and outcomes for youth with disabilities.

National Consortium on Leadership and Disability for Youth (NCLD-Youth).  NCLD-Youth is a youth-led resource, information, and training center for youth and emerging leaders with developmental disabilities, housed at the Institute for Educational Leadership, and funded by ADD.

NICHCY’s Research Center.  This website provides research-based information to guide your work with children with disabilities.  

Responsible Rx–Resources for Parents with Children with ADHD.  National Consumers League’s web page designed to help parents understand the treatment evaluation and management process after an AD/HD diagnosis has been made.

Center for Universal Design.  The Center for Universal Design at North Carolina State University is a national research, information, and technical assistance center that evaluates, develops, and promotes universal design in housing, public and commercial facilities, and related products.

National Direct Service Workforce Resource Center.  CMS funded website provides access to information and resources they may need about the direct service workforce.
