Project Description
The Carolina Institute for Developmental Disabilities (CIDD) works collaboratively with the Appalachian State University Scholars with Diverse Abilities Program (SDAP) to evaluate this program. SDAP supports an inclusive transition program for students with intellectual disabilities in higher education. The evaluation includes developing one or more tools and a timeline to gather information as the basis for long-range program planning.

A primary goal of SDAP is to facilitate the transition of participants from secondary school to an adult life characterized by a high degree of self-determination, paid employment, independent living, and an overall high quality of life. SDAP participants are included under the same university policies that apply to all students. Their on-campus life is fully integrated and inclusive.

During the five-year period of the project, we will evaluate SDAP for the purpose of improving outcomes. Based on evaluation results, the CIDD team can review program outcomes and make recommendations for revision. The CIDD team gathers data from targeted populations affected by SDAP through interviews, check lists, surveys, and/or focus groups:
1 SDAP participants
2 APP State student body, faculty, and staff
3 Families of SDAP participants

The CIDD team evaluates components of the program model to determine effectiveness in meeting individual student needs and interests. Documentation that describes participants provides evidence of academic and social inclusion throughout campus. The team also reviews the impact of SDAP on the campus community.

The CIDD team evaluates SDAP as a comprehensive PSE model by reviewing program policy, guidelines, and procedures toward successful implementation and sustainability.
