Project Description
We propose a 6-week program that will begin June 27 and end August 5.
Over the course of this FCBDD discovery program, we will serve 14job-seekers and 8-10 FCBDD staff in two groups. One group of 7 job seekers and 4-5 staff would come on Monday and Tuesday, and the second group would come on Wednesday and Thursday. All job-seekers and staff will come on Friday for 3 hours to attend classes. We propose that the job-seekers and staff come for 6 hours each day. The staff will receive their 16 hours of training spread over two days on June 14 and 15, 2016.

On May 10, we will offer an orientation for parents and guardians to discuss the components of the program. (We will develop a brochure for parents and guardiansto be presented on May 10.) During April and May, we will conduct assessments with each job-seeker to identify their strengths and limitations, job and personal preferences, and potential technology needs. These assessments will lay the groundwork for updating the Career Discovery Profile and will provide us the necessary information to develop an individualized plan for each job-seeker for the 6weeks of the program.

In the subsequent 6 weeks, we will place job-seekers in internships. In these internships, job-seekers will learn new job skills as well as new strategies for working successfully in community environments. We will provide job coaches for part of this time, who will work alongside the FCBDD staff. Using a coaching model, FCBDD staff will be expected to fully implement all aspects of the job coaching by the end of the program. In addition to the internships, we will spend time working with adults on community safety skills (e.g., familiarity with campus safety, learning to carry identification, stranger danger, practicing navigating the medical campus). They will also spend time engaging in job shadows, informational interviews, and employment tours.

FCBDD staff will participate in a two day, eight-hour training that will focus on various topics, including using evidence-based practices (such as prompting strategies, providing reinforcement, and fading supports) when teaching new skills, the career discovery process, and resources provided by Employment First that they can access. We will also provide the FCBDD staff with ongoing opportunities to discuss their concerns and questions, using an iterative feedback cycle.

In the final week of the program, we will conduct any relevant post-program assessments and finalize reports and the vocational piece of the Career Discovery Profile. On Wednesday, August 10, we will have all of the job-seekers and FCBDD staff who have completed the program participate in a graduation ceremony, where they will have the opportunity to be recognized for their accomplishments and have the opportunity to share some of their experiences from the program.
