Applying the principles of inclusion and cultural self-determination, the University of Hawaii at Mānoa (UHM), in collaboration with the University of Hawaii Community College System (UHCC), proposes to enhance and expand a highly successful support model addressing the needs of Native Hawaiian youth at risk of failure to succeed in postsecondary education and realize improved employment outcomes. The proposed project will further develop the cultural responsiveness elements of a student support model currently being demonstrated in the UHCC system and will work to demonstrate the efficacy/effectiveness of the model in supporting Native Hawaiian youth at risk of school failure, including those with disabilities and other special needs. Further, we propose to expand and scale-up the promising model supports within each of the campuses of the University of Hawaii system, resulting in improved access (admission rates), retention (retain with ones peers), and completion of a program of study resulting in outcomes of quality employment or admission to a four-year program of study.
