Project Description
Established in 1987, the UNH Institute on Disability, together with the Center for Genetics and Child Development at Dartmouth Medical School and the Institute for Health, Law, and Ethics at Pierce Law comprise New Hampshire's University Center of Excellence on Disability (NHUCED). Full UCED status was granted in 1990. The NHUCED envisions a future where all persons including those living with disabilities are fully engaged members of their communities and culturally available supports are available across the lifespan. The mission of the NHUCED is to strengthen communities and ensure full access, equal opportunities, and participation for all. The NHUCED strives to be on the cutting edge of progressive policy and service delivery through our efforts in fostering choice and self determination in fully supported and inclusive families, schools, and communities. A very active Consumer Advisory Council (CAC) continues to guide the work of the NHUCED by meeting quarterly, serving on project subcommittees and advisory boards, reviewing the five year and internal strategic plans, and identifying new priorities. Each year, approximately four new members are elected to the CAC representing the geographic diversity within New Hampshire. 100% of the CAC represent parents and adults with disabilities and includes representation from the partnering organizations People First, Disability Rights Center, Parent Information Center, and the NH Developmental Disabilities Council.
