Project Description | |||
Through the Institute on Disabilities (IOD), the Employment Here and Now! Program is to provide meaningful work opportunities for youth with disabilities with a focus on youth who are living and attending school in the North Philadelphia area. We want youth with disabilities to be engaged in work and careers that lead to a productive adult life. Although internal policies, training and diverse recruiting sources all play a role in helping businesses recruit individuals with disabilities, this program takes a more immediate action with long-term benefits offering internships to high school students, recent graduates and/or young adults with disabilities. These internships will not only help these individuals gain confidence and experience that they need to be provide opportunities for inclusion that might otherwise not present themselves. The program's objectives are to maintain relationships with existing departments within Temple University and to also begin selecting other areas across campus that will identify potential job opportunities by evaluating their workforce. Simultaneously, we will recruit candidates to participate in the program, offering paid internships to a total of thirty youth with disabilities who are attending TECH Freire Charter School,Simon Gratz High School, students who are enrolled in 10D's Leadership Career Studies Program (LCS), lNext, the project will provide training to 10 students within departments across Temple's campuses, with rotating positions creating varied work experiences. Our program will also help candidates by connecting them to additional employment training agencies such as PA CareerLink in North Philadelphia (19140) which will further help candidates improve their skills and assess occupational training needs as well as provide an ongoing resource for career advancement. |
