Project Description
The Munroe-Meyer Institute is in its 12th year of staff training for ENCOR employees. The Eastern Nebraska Community Office on Retardation (ENCOR) is amongst the nation's oldest agencies providing community-based services and supports to persons with Developmental Disabilities/Mental Retardation. ENCOR currently serves over 800 individuals through a variety of programs involving residential, day, respite, supported employment, and behavioral support activities. ENCOR is also the largest employer of direct support personnel in the State, employing over 700 individuals. Through a collaborative arrangement between the Munroe-Meyer Institute (Nebraska's UCEDD), Metropolitan Community College, and ENCOR, training workshops are provided in a "coursework" format that provides academic college credits for participants. Four basic "courses" have been certified in the Metropolitan Community College Human Services Department and include:
? HMS-107, Introduction to Serving and Supports for Persons with Developmental Disabilities
? HMS-108, Principles for Achieving Goals in Serving Persons with Disabilities
? HMS-104, Behavior Analysis and Intervention/Positive Behavioral Supports
? HMS-106, Legal and Ethical Issues (Mini-Course)

Courses are taught at the UCEDD from 4 to 6 times annually and encompass anywhere from 8 to 40 hours of educational contact for students/trainees. Each year, approximately 200 to 250 staff (approximately one-third of the total ENCOR staff) participate in a minimum of one "course." Completion of three of the courses leads to a "Certificate" from Metropolitan Community College, recognizing the achievement and accomplishment of participants in mastering coursework in the area of Developmental Disabilities. Based upon "articulation agreements" with other colleges and universities, coursework is also "credit-able" towards Associate and Bachelor degrees.
