Clinical Research Training through Facing Your Fears, a treatment protocol for ASD and co-occurring anxiety

Over the last 15 years, trainees have participated in all aspects of the clinical research development process for the Facing Your Fears (FYF) treatment protocol. FYF is a Cognitive Behavioral Therapy-based program aimed toward youth with high-functioning Autism Spectrum Disorders who need assistance managing anxiety symptoms that interfere with daily life. The program uses a group treatment model along with a well-developed parent education component to assist youth in identifying their anxiety and/or fears, as well as learning strategies to manage their anxiety symptoms. Youth are also encouraged to face fears.

Trainees join the project based on a pre-existing interest and knowledge base, which is essential to the bi-directional aspect of the training experience. The project faculty have benefited from the feedback of trainees who are not seasoned professionals because their input has resulted in a product that is widely accessible to community practitioners. However, it is essential that trainees bring a base level of knowledge and/or experience in working with individuals with ASD so that they are able to offer valuable input into the ongoing development/research processes.
