Communication Intervention for Preschoolers learning to use Augmentative & Alternative Communication

Juniper Garden Children’s Project, University of Kansas – Kansas City, KS

• Served on peer-mediated communication intervention study designed for preschoolers with autism spectrum

disorders (ASD) learning to use augmentative & alternative communication. Assisted with formal & informal play,

language & cognitive assessments of referred preschoolers. Implemented study in inclusive classroom settings in

Kansas City & Lawrence preschools. Assisted with development of behavioral coding system.

Clinical Research Assistant July 2011 - August 2013

New Mexico Cleft Palate Center – Albuquerque, NM

• Maintained craniofacial patient registry. Prepared team application for American Cleft Palate-Craniofacial

Association for team approval & registration. Designed & implemented longitudinal speech outcome study to

evaluate internal cleft palate surgical repair approaches. Conducted cleft palate speech evaluations using informal & formal diagnostic tools. Conducted nasoendoscopy procedures to evaluate symptoms of velopharyngeal

insufficiency. Assisted with feeding interventions for newborns with clefts.

• Identified & assessed adults at risk for cognitive-communication & swallowing disorders from culturally &

linguistically diverse backgrounds. Provided evidence-based interventions in multidisciplinary setting. Prepared

Little Nations Academic Center, Haskell Indian Nations University – Lawrence, KS January 2014 – Present

• Implemented evidence-based interventions in play group setting to NA children ages birth to three at risk for

communication & literacy disorders. Collaborated with staff & parents to develop culturally-tailored language &

literacy units which incorporated traditional NA stories and materials.

Cleft Palate Clinic, University of Kansas Medical Center – Kansas City, KS January 2014-Present

• Conducted speech evaluation of individuals with cleft palate & velopharyngeal insufficiency using perceptual rating

tools & nasometry instrumentation. Collaborated with multidisciplinary cleft team to establish treatment of care.

Schiefelbusch Speech-Language-Hearing Clinic – Lawrence, KS January 2014 - July 2014

• Implemented interventions to client with receptive/expressive language disorders, social communication impairment, & academic challenges secondary to ASD. Assessed school-age children with receptive/expressive language, literacy & articulation concerns. Led parent meetings to present diagnostic findings using a strengths-based reporting model.

• Identified & assessed adults at risk for communication & swallowing disorders in home healthcare setting.

• Provided evidence-based interventions to students age nine to ten with social communication disorders in a summer camp setting. Collaborated with camp staff to develop communication supports & document daily progress for camp participants.

Oskaloosa Public Schools USD 341 – Oskaloosa, KS January 2014 - May 2014

• Provided evidence-based speech & language interventions to five students in inclusive setting (1st grade) & two7th graders in inclusive and pull out settings. Documented daily progress & prepared quarterly IEP progress notes.

ASD Clinic, Center for Child Health & Development - Kansas City, KS October 2013 - December 2014

• Administered cognitive & communication assessment, as part of a multidisciplinary team, to toddlers referred due to concerns of ASD. Administered & scored Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule – 2nd Edition (ADOS-2).
