James Dean, Au.D. is a Senior Lecturer and Clinical Audiologist in the Department of Speech Language and Hearing Sciences at the University of Arizona. He has a Doctor of Audiology (Au.D.) degree and Master's degree in Education for the Deaf. Dr. Dean has over 25 years of experience in audiologic assessment and audiologic intervention across the lifespan. His primary clinical focus has been in early detection, assessment, and management of auditory disorders in infants and young children with developmental disabilities. This experience includes over fifteen years of performing electrophysiological assessments with well babies and graduates from the Level III Newborn Intensive Care Unit. He remains very active clinically in the UA Hearing Clinics and the Tucson Medical Center Department of Pediatric Therapies. Dr. Dean teaches graduate level courses related to infant a childhood hearing loss. Dr. Dean has conducted research and published on the behavioral assessment of auditory function in individuals with developmental disabilities. His current research interests are in developing models for predicting audiologic treatment outcome and the application of functional measures to validate treatment efficacy in infants and young children. Dr. Dean has extensive experience working with state health agencies. For example, as a Consulting Audiologist for the State of Maine Newborn Hearing Program in 2008 and 2009 he: 1) facilitated (Chaired), the Working Groups for developing State guidelines for infant audiology assessment and fitting of amplification with infants; 2) supported audiologists in their endeavors to meet the goals and challenges of a state-wide EHDI program; and, 3) was the audiology representative for the State of Maine at a National Initiative for Children's Healthcare Quality (NICHQ) meeting held in Atlanta in 2009. Dr. Dean is an advocate for community outreach programs and he has participated in numerous national and international humanitarian audiology projects.
