Oklahoma LEND Graduate's Non-Profit Nationally Recognized

Jeanette O'Hara is an OK LEND 2022 graduate and Founder/Executive Director of the nonprofit, Will's House, located just outside Tulsa in Jenks, Oklahoma. Will's House serves as a specialized respite option that supports full time caregivers of children and young adults with medical needs or intellectual/developmental disabilities. Jeanette's approach is simple yet profound: "What do you need? How can we help you?" This philosophy reflects a commitment to addressing the diverse and often overlooked gaps in services for caregivers and families.

2023 Residential Information Systems Project Summative Evaluation

The National Association of State Directors of Developmental Disabilities Services (NASDDDS) is evaluating the Residential Information Systems Project (RISP). Through this evaluation, NASDDDS will assess the extent to which RISP is meeting the needs of state DD agencies, organizations funded by the U.S. Administration for Community Living (ACL), elected officials and interested others. The evaluation is funded by the subcontract with the University of Minnesota from the ACL (Cooperative Agreement #90DNPA0001-05).

Charting the LifeCourse Nexus Ambassador Badge Academy

In the summer of 2021, Charting the LifeCourse Nexus piloted the Ambassador Badge Academy courses with a select group of LifeCourse Nexus Coaches. And, after a successful pilot run, the Ambassador Badge Academy courses are now available to all certified Charting the LifeCourse Ambassadors.

RETAIN Kentucky Receives Grant to Expand Services

The UK Human Development Institute will collaborate with the Kentucky Office of Vocational Rehabilitation to implement the $21.6 million RETAIN Kentucky award from the US Department of Labor to deliver return-to-work/stay-at-work services through strategic partnerships, early intervention strategies, and innovative support services for people who have acquired an injury or illness outside of the workplace that makes it difficult to work.

A Developmental Disabilities Conference for Families of Individuals Who are Deaf & Hard of Hearing was held on Tinian at the JC Caf� on March 13, 2021. The participating disabilities network partners are the Public School System Special Education & Early Intervention Programs, the Developmental Disabilities Council, Northern Marianas Protection and Advocacy Systems Inc., the University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities, Commonwealth Healthcare Corp.- Maternal & Child Health Bureau and the Office of Vocational Rehabilitation.

Direct Support Workforce and COVID-19 National Report: Six-Month Follow-up

The Institute on Community Integration's Research and Training Center on Community Living for Persons with intellectual and Developmental Disabilities at the University of Minnesota, in partnership with the National Alliance for Direct Support Professionals, conducted a survey of approximately 9,000 direct support professionals (DSPs) from across the country about their experiences supporting people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) during the COVID-19 pandemic. This is a six-month follow-up report to the initial report completed in April 2020 and is the largest study conducted on the direct support workforce.

Vital Statistics: ICI Supplies Key Housing Data

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention cites data monitored by the Institute on Community Integration (MN UCEDD) in its Healthy People 2030 objectives. The CDC has set a target for reducing the percentage of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) living in congregate settings serving seven or more people with disabilities to 11.5 percent in 2030, down from the current baseline of 22.7 percent.

Act Early Ohio Initiative

The UCCEDD was awarded a one-year grant from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to build upon existing Ohio Act Early Ambassador activities. The goal of the initiative is to increase awareness about the importance of developmental screening in early childhood and tracking of developmental milestones with the support of the evidence-based Learn the Signs Act Early materials developed by the CDC.

Next Steps at Vanderbilt (TN IDDRC, UCEDD, LEND) celebrates 10 years as TN's first inclusive higher ed program for students with intellectual disability

For the past decade, students with intellectual disability have found an inclusive postsecondary education experience through Next Steps at Vanderbilt (TN IDDRC, UCEDD, LEND). The program, housed in Peabody College of education and human development's Department of Special Education, is marking its 10th anniversary with events and commemorations throughout 2020.

Vanderbilt Kennedy Center (TN IDDRC, UCEDD, LEND) Works to Create Advocacy Education Opportunities for Community

The Vanderbilt Kennedy Center (TN IDDRC, UCEDD, LEND) has been creating multiple ways in which the greater Vanderbilt and Nashville community can gain skills in advocacy. With a LEND group project geared towards developing an "Advocacy Toolkit" and the Vanderbilt Kennedy Center's recent 2020 Educate to Advocate public policy workshop, Vanderbilt students, staff, and faculty work to make advocacy skills both attainable and accessible.

AUCD Policy Fellowship 2020

The Policy Fellowship is an opportunity for an advanced network member to live and work in Washington, DC for one year, learning about AUCD, current legislation affecting people with disabilities and their families, and exercising leadership skills. The Fellow's responsibilities will be developed based on the needs of the Association and the interest and experience of the Fellow. Deadline: March 31; start date: September 2014.

AUCD Celebrates the 30th Anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act

As we begin 2020, we as a nation, including the Association of University Centers on Disabilities (AUCD), will be celebrating the 30th anniversary of the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). This landmark civil rights legislation impacts the lives of millions of Americans with disabilities and protects against discrimination and ensures and improves access to opportunities afforded to all.

Program Launched for Special Education Students to Combat Social Isolation (NE UCEDD/LEND)

The Munroe-Meyer Institute and Millard Public Schools will partner on new social and recreational skills development programs for special education students with autism and other forms of intellectual and developmental disabilities, designed to decrease social isolation and prepare students for life after school. "Social and life skills development is essential for the long-term prosperity of every individual," said Karoly Mirnics, M.D., Ph.D., director of the Munroe-Meyer Institute.
