Texas A&M University's Project TAPP is excited to provide professional development for teacher and paraprofessional teams working with students with autism spectrum disorder. Participants will receive two-days of PD workshops in autism and. related interventions and follow-up support during the school year.

Partnership Helps Students "Self-Determine" Ways to Improve Learning
For three years, a collaboration between Free State High School and researchers at the KU Center on Developmental Disabilities has grown to include more than 20 teachers at the school and hundreds of students with and without disabilities. It is led by KUCDD director, Karrie Shogren. "We intuitively know that identifying goals and things we want to work towards are critical for us to move forward in our lives," Shogren said. "We've spent a lot of time in disability supports and in schools in general talking to students about goals" even getting them to start being able to identify those for themselves. VKC (TN IDDRC/UCEDD/LEND)'s Verity Rodrigue Rodrigues to serve on National Mental Health Advisory Board
Verity Rodrigues, M.S., Ph.D., educational consultant and instructor in Pediatrics at the Vanderbilt Kennedy Center's (TN IDDRC/UCEDD/LEND) reatment and Research Institute for Autism Spectrum Disorders (VKC TRIAD), has been selected to participate on the advisory board for the National Training Center on Mental Health and Intellectual/Developmental Disabilities (MHIDD).

IU Research Study Concludes that Inclusive Classroom Placements Result in Higher Academic Outcomes for Students with Disabilities (IN UCEDD)
The study, conducted by the Center on Education and Lifelong Learning at the Indiana Institute on Disability and Community, followed a cohort of Indiana students with disabilities, from third through eighth grade, to assess the relationship between special education placement in high, mixed, and low inclusive classrooms and academic success. By comparing the outcomes of students included in general education classrooms with similar students in separate special education classrooms, the study was able to determine the impact of inclusion upon student state assessments.

A Vanderbilt Kennedy Center (TN UCEDD, IDDRC, LEND) Study of Special Educators' Use of Evidence-based Practices
The field of special education has long stressed the need for educators to use evidence-based practices, but the gap between identification and implementation remains. What influences how special educators decide which practices to implement is not well understood. Vanderbilt Kennedy Center (TN UCEDD, IDDRC, LEND) researchers surveyed special educators to better understand factors in instructional decision making. Their findings were reported in the journal Focus on Autism and Other Developmental Disabilities in February 2018.

Vanderbilt Kennedy Center (TN UCEDD, IDDRC, LEND) Provides Educators with Mindfulness Tools and Techniques
Special educators have demanding jobs: long hours, few breaks, and countless responsibilities throughout the school day teaching students with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The work can be stressful, and that stress and can take its toll if it is not addressed in a timely manner. The need for self-care was the impetus behind the mindfulness training offered through the Spring 2018 Britt Henderson Training Series for Educators at the Vanderbilt Kennedy Center (UCEDD, IDDRC, LEND).

Civil Rights Principles for the Reauthorization of the Higher Education Act of 1965
AUCD joins 50 organizations in support
For children and adults with disabilities and their families, the Higher Education Act is of critical importance. AUCD has joined nearly 50 other organizations in signing onto civil rights principles that we believe must be included in the upcoming reauthorization of that law. The Higher Education Act creates opportunities for higher education for students with intellectual disability through its creation of the Transition and Postsecondary Programs for Students with Disabilities (TPSIDs).

President Donald Trump's Intent to Appoint Personnel to the President 's Committee for People with Intellectual Disabilities (PCPID)
The PCPID has 31 members: 18 citizens, and 13 ex officio (federal government) members. A maximum of 21 citizen members is allowed. Citizen members are appointed by the President and serve for a maximum of two years. A variety of individuals are appointed as citizen members, including parents of individuals with intellectual disabilities, scientists and professionals from the field, community and business representatives, and systems advocates.

2018 OAR Scholarship Program
Deadline: May 7, 2018
The Organization for Autism Research (OAR) will accept applications for the "2018 OAR Scholarship Program" starting Monday, December 4, 2017 through Monday, May 7, 2018 at 11:59 p.m. ET. Applicants can apply to either the Schwallie Family Scholarship or the Lisa Hussman Scholarship. Each offers $3,000 scholarships to students diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (DSM-IV or 5 criteria) pursuing full-time post-secondary, undergraduate education in the United States.

Updated Educator's Guide Available from OAR
The Organization for Autism Research (OAR) prides itself in the evidence-based information resources it shares with self-advocates, their parents, educators, and paraprofessionals. Among these materials are the eight "Life Journey Through Autism" guidebooks that OAR has published since 2003. The ninth and newest guide in that set is "Life Journey Through Autism: An Educator's Guide to ASD (Level 1 Supports)," a revision and update of the "Educator's Guide to Asperger Syndrome."

Texas Center for Disability Studies Welcomes Nina Zuna! (TX UCEDD)
The Texas Center for Disability Studies at the University of Texas at Austin is pleased to welcome Dr. Nina Zuna as the Associate Director. Dr. Zuna comes to TCDS after working as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Special Education at UT-Austin. Dr. Zuna has over 20 years of experience working with individuals with disabilities and their families in a variety of roles including, professor, researcher, certified special education teacher, and in-home/in-school behavioral skills trainer.

IU Research: Indiana Teacher Evaluations are Improving but Remain Inconsistent (IN UCEDD)
Teacher evaluation plans developed by Indiana school districts are inconsistent and erratic and vary widely in quality and comprehensiveness, according to research by the Indiana Teacher Appraisal and Support System project at the Center on Education and Lifelong Learning at Indiana University Bloomington.

US Department of Labor Signs Alliance Agreement to Increase Inclusion of Workers with Disabilities
Association of University Centers on Disabilities latest in collaboration effort
To promote inclusive workplaces that embrace the skills and talents of workers with disabilities, the U.S. Department of Labor's Office of Disability Employment Policy signed an alliance agreement today with the Association of University Centers on Disabilities.
