OHSU UCEDD: A personal and professional experience
In the summer of 2020, Jan Staehely, communication consultant and staff member at the OHSU Institute on Development and Disability UCEDD, and an individual with Cerebral Palsy who uses an assistive communication device, had a frightening experience. Wildfires were approaching the south-eastern towns near Portland, Oregon and her neighborhood was placed in an evacuation zone.

OHSU UCEDD Addresses Emergency Preparedness for People with Disabilities
In 2021, the Oregon Health & Science University UCEDD partnered with the University of Southern California UCEDD at Children's Hospital Los Angeles to host an Emergency Preparedness webinar for people with disabilities. Then, after a winter of severe storms and early extreme heat waves in the Pacific Northwest, the OHSU UCEDD hosted a second webinar in 2022.

Resources for Disasters and Disability
The REDDy Directory is an online searchable guide to disability-related resources, services, and information for those affected by COVID-19. The site allows visitors to search by zip code, key word, or resource type. Useful for case managers, organizations, and individuals.

The Center for Learning and Leadership Oklahoma's University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (UCEDD) Distributes over 150,000 Masks Across the State
The Center for Learning and Leadership Oklahoma's University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (CLL/UCEDD), at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center, received a large donation of KN-95 masks to offer to our community affiliates and academic partners at no cost thanks to their partnership with OU Health. Through this generous donation, the CLL/UCEDD was able to provide over 150,000 high-quality KN-95 masks to more than 25 university affiliates, and CLL-affiliated community-based provider agencies and programs that serve people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) and their families across the state of Oklahoma.

Sixty-one million adults in America live with a disability as of 2020, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Disabilities come in many forms and are essentially any condition, mentally or physically, affecting on's ability to complete certain activities.

Friends and Family Campaign
As we move into the fall and winter, we'll see our friends and families on special occasions. Our "Friends and Family" Campaign shares tools on how to keep encouraging vaccine confidence in non-judgmental ways. Ask a friend or a family member that you may have who is in a local community or civic group and reach out together to listen to any questions or concerns and share information in a kind way.

HDI Launches Storytelling Website
The University of Kentucky Human Development Institute Digital Storytelling Initiative highlights the stories and lived experiences of people with disabilities. Interviews address multiple life experience living and working in the community. Most recently, the Vaccine Confidence and Access for People for People with Disabilities Initiative interviewed with people with disabilities about their vaccine experience and the importance of keeping our communities healthy.

Dr. Laura Stough awarded the Knowledge Award for Excellence in Education or Research
This summer Dr. Laura Stough was awarded the Knowledge Award for Excellence in Education or Research from the Texas Chapter of the American Association on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities. It was awarded for significant contributions to the dissemination of knowledge in the field of intellectual and developmental disabilities through education and/or research.

COVID-19 Screening in Schools for Children with IDD
Since November 2020, investigators at Washington University in St. Louis School of Medicine have studied whether weekly saliva-based screening testing of staff and students and mitigation strategies may help keep children with disabilities safe at school.

MI-DDI and FEMA Flood Disaster Speakers Panel
Michigan Developmental Disabilities Institute (MI-DDI) joined the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to host a webinar featuring several speakers from FEMA on August 25, 2021. The session focused on resources and aid available to Michiganders affected by the severe storms and floods of June 2021. AUCD's Prepared4ALL Initiative Selected for 2021 Horace G. (Hod) Ogden Award
AUCD's Prepared4ALL initiative has been selected for the 2021 Horace G. (Hod) Ogden Award from the American Public Health Association's Public Health Education and Health Promotion Section. This award is highly competitive and honors outstanding use of humor to promote better health education, health promotion and health communication practice.

National Vaccine Month of Action
Beginning June 4, Made to Save is launching a month-long mobilization effort in support of the Department of Health & Human Services' We Can Do This campaign to ensure as many people as possible get vaccinated by July 4th. From June 5th through July 4th, we're hosting community-level events across the country and online to encourage people-especially those in communities hit the hardest by the pandemic-to get vaccinated to protect themselves, their loved ones, and their community.

Parent Navigator Team's COVID-19 Response at the USC UCEDD
The Parent Navigator (PN) Project provides three full-time Parent Navigators, who are parents of individuals with developmental disabilities themselves and have extensive experience in system navigation, to assist families with linkage to Early Intervention Services, the CA Regional Centers, and other appropriate community resources.
