Missouri UCEDD Launches Third Season of Accessible: The Podcast

It's BAAAAACK! The University of Missouri-Kansas City's Institute for Human Development, the University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities for the state of Missouri (UCEDD), has just launched a new season of Accessible: The Podcast. Accessible is the podcast that opens the door to disability leaders and their ideas. Featuring UMKC-IHD Director George Gotto and Senior Research Assistant Amelia Reighard. The podcast hosts leaders in the disability field with new insights and developments that you can channel into your own career and development. Missouri's UCEDD Develops "After Abuse: Resources for Missourians with Disabilities"

The University of Missouri-Kansas City's Institute for Human Development, the University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities for the state of Missouri, in cooperation with the Missouri Developmental Disabilities Council, has published a new online resource called After Abuse: Resources for Missourians with Disabilities to help people with disabilities learn about abuse and what happens when it is reported.

PATHS Graduate Highlight: Averie Lane Class of 2019

Since 2019, PATHS graduate, Averie Lane, has been very busy! Upon graduation, Averie has completely immersed herself in caring for children both at the daycare where she works and as a traveling nanny. Averie now has her own babysitting business that has really taken off. The word has spread throughout the community about the amazing level of care that she provides for each child that she is responsible for.

In Memoriam: Dr. Steven E. Brown

Aloha, it was with great sadness and heavy heart to hear this past week of the death of Dr. Steven Brown. Steve served for many years as a professor of Disability Studies at the Center on Disability Studies, University of Hawai'i at Mānoa. He was lead investigator on numerous projects working to improve the quality-of-life experience for persons with disabilities across the globe. Further, Steve was respected internationally as an activist and advocate for the rights of all persons with disabilities.

2023 CORE Trainee Research Award

This award was established in 2015 by the Council on Research and Evaluation and recognizes outstanding research accomplished by a current or recent AUCD trainee. The 2023 CORE Trainee Research Award was presented to Larissa Minner during the AUCD 2023 Awards Ceremony on November 7, 2023.

The State of the States in Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Awarded a 5-Year Grant

The State of the States in Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (State of the States) has been awarded a 5-year grant from the Administration on Community Living (ACL) that will continue to support spreading their knowledge of data regarding IDD services and supports. The grant totals $450,000 per year over a period of 5 years and will be used toward information dissemination activities such as quarterly webinars, project reports, customized data briefs, data visualization, and more.

UConn UCEDD and Rhode Island UCEDD Present to International Network on Inclusion for Early Childhood Education in Athens, Greece

Mary Beth Bruder, Ph.D., Director of the University of Connecticut Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities and Amy Grattan, Ph.D., Director of the Paul V. Sherlock Center on Disabilities, Rhode Island College, were invited to serve as members of an international leadership group focused on the development of an International Network on Inclusion for early childhood education in Athens, Greece.

WVU CED Expands Efforts to Improve Outcomes for Babies Born with Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome

Incidence rates of newborns diagnosed with neonatal abstinence syndrome have rapidly increased in rural states as West Virginia continues to see a rise in opioid use and addiction, including pregnant women. For the past five years, the WVU Center for Excellence in Disabilities (WVU CED) has tested and implemented models of care to strengthen services for West Virginia families with infants born exposed to substances in utero or diagnosed with neonatal abstinence syndrome.

Nugent Appointed to National Disability Rights Network Board of Directors

Austin Nugent has built bridges between many different parts of the disability community, and she's a Disability Program Administrator at HDI, has been named an At-Large member for the National Disability Rights Network's (NDRN) Board of Directors. That means that she'll help provide oversight to an organization that protects and advocates for people with all sorts of disabilities nationwide, focusing on ensuring that people's rights are protected.

OHSU Institute on Development and Disability UCEDD Expands Impact of Sexual Health Education

The UCEDD at OHSU has implemented The Friendships and Dating Program, created by the University of Alaska Anchorage Center for Human Development, in Oregon for the past three years. With its growing success, the FDP has received a grant extension and will continue for another year.

Turner Appointed to Kentucky Employment First Council by Governor Beshear

In 2020, Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear signed an executive order to create the Kentucky Employment First Council, which helps people with disabilities find meaningful employment. Morgan Turner, HDI Project Assistant, has accepted a position as Vice Chair on that council.

Nisonger Center and DD Council Nursing Workforce Study Podcast

The Nisonger Center, in partnership with the Ohio DD Council, released a podcast on Spotify discussing our study of the DD Nursing Workforce Crisis. Ohio DD Talks is a podcast series featuring stories and conversations with Ohioans with developmental disabilities about current issues that are important to them. The developmental disabilities nursing crisis affects individuals with DD and their families across Ohio. This episode features Mackenzie Burness and Stephanie Hosley of Ohio State University Medical Center, who will discuss the public health workforce crisis, their research, and what we can do.
