Indiana LEND Fellow Wins SDBP Research Award

Screen Time Associated with Increased Inattention and Hyperactivity and Lower Language Scores in Young Children

In a new study of 36-month-old children showed that between a control group, children with an autism diagnosis, and children with ADHD symptoms, children with more inattention and hyperactivity had more screen time. They also had lower language scores. The root cause is still unknown, and this could be correlation. Children at risk for neurodevelopmental disorders had a negative association with screen time.

NIH Awards $100 Million for Autism Centers of Excellence Program

AUCD Network Members Awarded

The National Institutes of Health has awarded a total of $100 million over the next five years to support nine Autism Centers of Excellence (ACEs). This endeavor funds large research projects to understand and develop interventions for autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Created in 2007, the ACE program is renewed every five years.



Excellence in Autism Support Award Goes to Delaware UCEDD Research Manager

For her "Outstanding Research on Autism in Higher Education," Jessica Monahan, research manager with the University of Delaware Center for Disabilities Studies' Spectrum Scholars program, has won an inaugural Excellence in Autism Support award from the College Autism Network.



KU and UNC Collaborate on Propel Project

Launched in 2020, the Propel Project will examine the impact of a comprehensive intervention combining the Self-Determined Learning Model of Instruction and Peer Supports, on academic, social, and functional outcomes for autistic secondary students in inclusive general education classrooms. This collaboration between the University of Kansas (KU) and the University of North Carolina (UNC) is led by KU Center on Developmental Disabilities Director (KUCDD) Karrie A. Shogren, KU Juniper Gardens Children's Project Director Brian Boyd, KUCDD Assistant Research Professor Sheida K. Raley, and UNC Associate Professor Kara Hume.



AUCD's National Center on Disability in Public Health Funds Pilot Studies using Administrative Data to Evaluate "Child Find" Early Identification Systems in Indiana and Minnesota

The Association of University Centers on Disabilities (AUCD) has expanded its National Center on Disability in Public Health efforts with the funding of two, one-year pilot studies using administrative data to evaluate "child find" early identification systems in Indiana and Minnesota. This "child find" pilot is made possible by a cooperative agreement with the National Center on Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities (NCBDDD) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).



Autism Friendly Initiative

Patients on the autism spectrum have various sensory and communication needs which can make the fast-paced and often over-stimulating hospital environment particularly challenging. In response, Boston Medical Center (BMC) launched the Autism Friendly Initiative in order to improve the healthcare experience for patients with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and their families.



Iowa's EPSDT "Care for Kids" Shares Beneficial Telehealth Tips

In Iowa, children and youth who are eligible for Medicaid receive their health care benefits through Iowa EPSDT Care for Kids. Iowa's Department of Human Services (DHS) manages these Early and Periodic Screening, Diagnosis and Treatment (EPSDT) benefits, and each year, DHS contracts with Iowa's UCEDD to offer information and training to the Medicaid providers who care for kids.



Act Early Ohio Initiative

The UCCEDD was awarded a one-year grant from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to build upon existing Ohio Act Early Ambassador activities. The goal of the initiative is to increase awareness about the importance of developmental screening in early childhood and tracking of developmental milestones with the support of the evidence-based Learn the Signs Act Early materials developed by the CDC.



CLD Researchers Explore the Effects of COVID Among People with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities and Direct Support Professionals

The Center for Leadership in Disability (CLD) at Georgia State University (GSU) received a $25,000 grant from the Georgia Council on Developmental Disabilities (GCDD) to conduct a mixed-method study exploring the ongoing effects of COVID-19 on people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) and the direct support workforce.



IU Research Institute in Disability to Administrate State-wide Disability Resource Database FINDER

For those with disabilities and their families, trying to navigate a complex web of services, programs, and other disability-related community resources can be daunting. In November, IU's Indiana Institute on Disability and Community (IIDC) partnered with AWS Foundation of Ft. Wayne, IN, to implement Indiana Disability Resource FINDER as part of its library information and referral services.



The ECHO Effect

The University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities at the Waisman Center, University of Wisconsin-Madison, recently launched two new initiatives - ECHO AAC and ECHO Autism WI. Both programs are targeted to help improve and expand teletraining services using the Project ECHO� (Extension for Community Healthcare Outcomes) platform. Project ECHO (the mantra for which is "All teach, all learn") uses video-conferencing technology to provide education and case consultation on best practice clinical services, training, and resources for individuals with specific healthcare needs that are difficult to meet locally.

MMI Psychology Department to Offer Free Consultative Clinics

The Munroe-Meyer Institute (MMI) Psychology Department at UNMC is offering free behavioral telehealth consultative clinics. Families of children age 18 or younger can access two free consultative appointments via the teleconferencing platform Zoom or by phone. Providing the services via telehealth also means they will be available to people across the entire state.



Early Intervention Focused Telehealth Support Series

Please join the Vanderbilt Kennedy Center's Treatment and Research Institute for Autism Spectrum Disorders (VKC TRIAD) for a series of web-based training opportunities on the remote delivery of early intervention services to young children with ASD and related developmental delays and disabilities. While many home and clinic based services are currently suspended do to the COVID-19 pandemic, our goal is to equip early intervention providers with information and resources to continue serving families from a distance.



Georgetown University Center for Child and Human Development Completes Child Protection Specialist Training for Abu Dhabi, Early Childhood Authority

Faculty from the Georgetown University Center for Child and Human Development (GUCCHD) trained over 100 Child Protection Specialists for the Abu Dhabi, Early Childhood Authority (ECA) over Zoom. Because of the Covid-19 pandemic plans to provide on-site training to child protection specialists in Abu Dhabi were quickly adapted to be conducted remotely. The program, Child Protection Specialist Training, is a component of an ambitious certification training program for all child protection specialists in Abu Dhabi.
