2021 Disability Policy Seminar

April 19-22, 2021 - A Virtual Event

The Disability Policy Seminar offers the opportunity for passionate advocates, self-advocates, experts, and professionals in the field to come together and learn about key issues that affect them most. After two days of training and learning, attendees head to Capitol Hill for a day of meetings with their Members of Congress.

Jennifer Rabalais Awarded Scholarship from CVS Health Foundation

Jennifer Rabalais, Co-Director of the Center on Aging and Community Living (CACL) was awarded a scholarship from the CVS Health Foundation to attend the 2020 American Society on Aging (ASA) Leadership Institute in Atlanta, Georgia. She received this honor for her regional and national leadership in the aging arena.

The Michigan Developmental Disabilities Institute (MI-DDI) at Wayne State University is proud to announce The MIchigan Older Caregivers of Emerging Adults with Autism and other Neurodevelopmental Disabilities (MI-OCEAN) Caregiver Support Project. MI- OCEAN is a statewide project funded by The Michigan Health Endowment Fund.

Update to the Administration for Community Living's Statement of Organization, Functions, and Delegations of Authority

A planned reorganization within the Administration for Community living (ACL) was note in the Federal Register on May 9th. The goals of the reorganization are to improve efficiency and effectiveness of the organization; strengthen infrastructure; and improve the connections between the organization and its stakeholders, grantees and consumers at the national, state and local levels. AUCD and other members of the disability community have engaged in efforts to learn more and understand the possible impacts.

Michigan Development Disabilities Institute (UCEDD-MI) Awarded Nearly $1 Million Grant from Michigan Health Endowment Fund

Awards will support older adult caregiver programs

The Michigan Health Endowment Fund has awarded nearly $1 million to two Wayne State University programs that protect and enhance the well-being of our area's older adults and caregivers. The Health Fund granted $413,903 to Dr. Peter Lichtenberg's program, SAFE: Caregiver Empowerment, and $500,000 to the Michigan Development Disabilities Institute (MI-DDI) for its program, Michigan Older Caregivers of Emerging Adults with Autism and other Neurodevelopmental Disabilities (MI-OCEAN) Family Support Project.

DePoy's Passion Fuels Research About Aging Maine Farmers (ME UCEDD)

The Crip, the Fat and the Ugly in an Age of Austerity: Resistance, Reclamation, and Affirmation Forum

A special June 2018 forum entitled �The Crip, The Fat and The Ugly in an Age of Austerity: Resistance, Reclamation, and Affirmation has been published in the Review of Disability Studies (RDS) Journal. The forum includes a series of articles exploring the processes and politics of austerity upon diverse and marginalized embodiments-how capitalism makes sense of and shapes body-minds; the ways in which austerity both marks and produces bodies and selves, and the means through which these are further shaped by disability, race, class, gender, age, size, sexuality, and nation. Articles for this forum were compiled by RDS Guest Editors, Dr. Jen Slater of Sheffield Hallam University and Dr. Kirsty Liddiard of The University of Sheffield (United Kingdom).

Vanderbilt Kennedy Center (TN UCEDD, IDDRC, LEND) Addressing Needs of Family Caregivers of Aging Adults with Down syndrome

In a paper published in the Journal of Policy and Practice in Intellectual Disabilities*, Vanderbilt Kennedy Center (TN UCEDD, LIDDRC, LEND) investigators explore the growing issues of family caregiving for aging adults with Down syndrome. Robert Hodapp, Ph.D., Vanderbilt professor of Special Education, Richard C. Urbano, Ph.D., Vanderbilt research professor in Pediatrics, and Meghan Burke, Ph.D., BCBA-D, assistant professor of Special Education at University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (and former VKC trainee!) report.

UM Study Finds Longstanding Interpretation of Disability Data Incomplete (MT UCEDD/LEND)

University of Montana researchers with the Research and Training Center on Disability in Rural Communities, or RTC:Rural, show that the standardized disability questions used by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services identify two distinct groups of people with disabilities: those with permanent disability and those with temporary disability.

Rose F Kennedy UCEDD at Montefiore Partners with Bronx Developmental Disabilities Council for 13 Annual Health Services Conference

The Rose F Kennedy UCEDD (NY) at Montefiore partnered with the Bronx Developmental Disabilities Council for its 13th Annual Health Services Conference on November 18, 2016, entitled Physical and Behavioral Health Care for Persons with Developmental Disabilities. For years the RFK UCEDD has worked collaboratively with the Council, an association of parents, advocates and professionals that is advisory to the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene and the New York State Office for People with Developmental Disabilities.

The authors discuss the service networks for aging and developmental and physical disabilities, which have traditionally functioned in distinctly separate camps.

Empowering Individuals to Influence Accessible Transportation

People with intellectual and developmental disabilities can influence the nature of accessible transportation in their communities. Through model demonstration grants, the Strengthening Inclusive Transportation Partnerships, funded by the US Administration for Community Living (ACL), Easter Seals and its colleagues from the Community Transportation Association of America and the National Association of Area Agencies on Aging (N4A) learned about the strategies that organizations, agencies, and individuals can use to facilitate active participation in transportation planning. Empowering people with disabilities to be decision-makers in transportation planning over time, can lead to improved accessible and coordinated service.

AUCD2015: Submit a Proposal Today

Deadline: June 5

AUCD is currently accepting proposals for our 2015 conference. This call for papers includes submissions for concurrent interactive presentations, concurrent panel presentations, single presentations, and posters. Proposals are welcomed on a multitude of topics on all things disability, including but certainly not limited to advocacy, behavior supports, disability studies, employment, health and wellness, leadership development, self-determination, technology, and much more.
