AUCD 2021 Conference Scholarships Available!

AUCD places great importance on having a diverse group of participants at the AUCD Conference. We seek to make the conference and all information presented as accessible as possible to as many people as possible, and recognize that cost can often be a barrier to attending. The AUCD Virtual Conference continues to provide a reduced registration fee for students, individuals with disabilities, and family members of individuals with disabilities. We are also providing both Leader and Conference scholarships this year to offset the cost of the virtual registration. Celebrating ADA in Good Health

Jennifer Hall-Lande of MN UCEDD/MN LEND in 2016 at the headquarters of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), where, as the Minnesota Act Early Ambassador, she was trained to promote early identification, screening, and intervention for autism and related neurodevelopmental disabilities in culturally- and linguistically-diverse communities across Minnesota.

Kennedy Krieger Institute Hosted Special Vaccine Clinics for People with Disabilities

Kennedy Krieger Institute recently partnered with Johns Hopkins Medicine to offer a series of free, drive-through vaccine clinics for people with disabilities. The clinics were held at the Baltimore-based Institute. More than 100 volunteers helped to plan and carryout the well-attended clinics, which were designed especially for individuals with intellectual disabilities, serious mental health disorders, behavioral disorders and those with complex medical conditions. Volunteers administered 580 shots.

NH-ME LEND Graduates Convince State to Extend Deadline for Submitting National Examination Scores

During the Spring of 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic impacted the lives of graduating LEND trainees in New Hampshire in unprecedented ways. After years of dedication to complete their master's degrees in Communication Sciences and Disorders, students were told there would be a delay in launching their careers. The closure of national examination centers, due to COVID-19, was delaying the processing of test results and subsequently delaying the granting of provisional licenses to speech language pathologists (SLP) in New Hampshire (NH).

MN LEND Webcast Will Address Neurobiology of Poverty

The 2016 Minnesota LEND Forum, "The Neurobiology of Poverty - Children Living in Poverty: Neurodevelopmental and Biological Correlates," explores what is known about the life-long effects of growing up in poverty via the perspectives of two leading researchers in the field. Dr. Seth Pollak of the University of Wisconsin-Madison will discuss, "Child Poverty and the Income-Achievement Gap: Insights from Cognitive Neuroscience" and Dr. Megan Gunnar from the University of Minnesota will present, "Poverty, Allostatic Load and the Stress Neuraxis: A Mechanism or a Bridge Too Far?"

U.S. Access Board Elects Regina Blye as Vice Chair (TX UCEDD)

The U.S Access Board unanimously elected Regina Blye as its Vice Chair. Blye, a Board member from Austin, Texas, is the Executive Director of the Texas State Independent Living Council where she works collaboratively with a Governor-appointed statewide board of directors and staff to build a more visible and informed community. She is a member of the Texas Center for Disability Studies Community Advisory Council, as well as several national and statewide boards such as the SILC Congress, NCIL, APRIL, Traumatic Brain Injury Advisory Council, Access Empowerment, and the Coalition of Texans with Disabilities.

Vanderbilt Kennedy Center (TN UCEDD, LEND, IDDRC) Member Erik Carter Serves as Expert Speaker at Congressional Briefing

Changing post-school pathways of youth and young adults with severe disabilities was the focus of Erik Carter's presentation at a Congressional briefing, March 4, 2016, sponsored by the Friends of the Institute of Education Sciences (FIES). Carter, Ph.D., is professor of Special Education and Vanderbilt Kennedy Center (TN UCEDD, LEND, IDDRC) member.

First Certified People Planning Together (PTP) Trainers in Texas! (TX UCEDD)

Shelbi Davenport and Justin Deleon both valedictorians from their prospective PATHS program classes are candidates to become the first People Planning Together (PPT) certified trainers in Texas. The People Planning Together curriculum was developed by The Learning Community for Person Centered Practices, an International organization that provides certification programs in an effort to offer training to people with a broad range of support needs. The Institute on Person Centered Practices which is a collaborative partnership between the Center on Disability and Development at Texas A&M University and the Center on Disability Studies at The University of Texas is providing the Mentor services and supports to training Justin and Shelbi. The Institute is a regional affiliate of The Learning Community that provides training for professionals, educators, managed care organizations, providers of services, family members and people with disabilities. PPT is tailored specifically to support people with disabilities to develop person centered plans.

Vanderbilt Kennedy Center (TN UCEDD, IDDRC, LEND) Member and ResearchMatch Developer Aims to Increase the Number of Participants with IDD in Research Studies

ResearchMatch (www.ResearchMatch.org) is a national online platform promoting the completion of clinical trials by matching individuals willing to participate in research with investigators nationwide. The recruitment tool was created in 2009 by Paul Harris Ph.D., Professor of Biomedical Informatics and Biomedical Engineering; Director, Office of Research Informatics; and member of the Vanderbilt Kennedy Center (TN UCEDD, IDDRC, LEND).

Health & Wellness Initiative Creates Positive Lifestyle Changes (KY UCEDD)

For people with disabilities, maintaining health and wellness is essential to being self-sufficient, achieving or maintaining independence, participating in community life, and preventing the onset of secondary health conditions. Yet research shows that people with disabilities have poorer health than the general population, including drastically higher rates of obesity and related conditions. In Kentucky, those numbers are even more concerning. The health and wellness initiative at the Human Development Institute has been working hard to develop resources to help people with disabilities and their family and friends stay healthy and to take charge in their own lifestyle choices.

Carrie Coffield, PhD, Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at The Boggs Center, Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, Malia Corde, Statewide Parent Advocacy Network (SPAN), Deepa Srinivasavaradan, SPAN, and Ericka Dickerson, NJ Department of Children and Families, were honored with the Parent-Professional Collaboration Award by SPAN and the Community of Care Consortium.
