Supporting Families Summit: Celebrating 10 Years

In recognition of the complex roles of family caregivers, and the challenges they face, leaders in the disability field came together at the 2011 Wingspread Summit to develop policy recommendations to improve supports for family caregivers. UMKC-IHD's Associate Director, Sheli Reynolds played a role in helping to plan the Wingspread Summit and later co-authored a report, "Building a National Agenda for Supporting Families with a Member with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities."

The Ohio State University Nisonger Center LEND Trainees Address Health Disparities through Virtual Sessions for New Mothers

Moms2B, a community-based pregnancy program for low-income mothers in central Ohio, was established by The Ohio State University Medical Center in 2010 to decrease high infant mortality rates in the state and help mothers deliver healthy, full-term infants. This community-based program meets weekly throughout pregnancy and through the infant's first year to provide education and support to moms. In-person meetings occur in a safe, familiar space where Moms can ask questions, receive education on infant development and reproductive health, and connect with local services.

HRSA Awardees Study Impact of COVID-19 on Receipt of Services and Parent Mental Health in Children with ASD

University of Delaware�s Dr. Anjana Bhat, associate professor in physical therapy, and JP Laurenceau, professor in psychological and brain sciences, have been awarded a grant from the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) at the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) for a new study to analyze the impacts of COVID-19 on receipt of behavioral, speech, occupational and physical therapy services and parent mental health in 9,000 children with autism from the SPARK cohort and to determine value derived from these services in an online capacity.

Kennedy Krieger Faculty Receive Grant to Build Capacity to Deliver Evidence Based Mental Health Intervention

Dr. Deepa Menon, of the Kennedy Krieger LEND Program and co-PIs Kathryn Van Eck, PhD and Nikeea Copeland Linder, PhD, MPH were recently awarded a Jesse DuPont Bell grant to address mental health and COVID-induced trauma in patients with autism and other special health care needs. By utilizing Cognitive Behavioral Intervention for Trauma in Schools (CBITS) training, Social Work trainees from collaborating HBCU�s will receive mentoring and training to deliver an evidence-based validated program through telemedicine to address student stress and anxiety, and to build coping skills and resilience.

Autism Intervention Research Network on Physical Health (AIR-P) Updates

Autistic Researcher Review Board (ARRB) member Mornik Giwa Onaiwu was featured on AUCD's podcast, AUCD Network Narratives: Real Stories from Our Members. The episode is titled "Using Storytelling to Connect Research and Lived Experience". The episode covers an important discussion on the need for respectful, affirming, and accurate language as well as the difference between person-first language versus identity-first language.

Charting the LifeCourse Nexus Ambassador Badge Academy

In the summer of 2021, Charting the LifeCourse Nexus piloted the Ambassador Badge Academy courses with a select group of LifeCourse Nexus Coaches. And, after a successful pilot run, the Ambassador Badge Academy courses are now available to all certified Charting the LifeCourse Ambassadors.

The National Training Institute provides an in-depth learning experience built around the #PyramidModel. The Institute, sponsored by Florida Center for Inclusive Communities and the National Center for Pyramid Model Innovations (OSEP) brings together experts from around the country who skillfully present three-hour workshops and 1-hour toolkit sessions offering practical, ready-to-use information on systems and practices to promote social-emotional development in young children.

NH-ME LEND Program Launches 30th Year With Fall 2021 Kickoff Event

In early September, a new cohort of trainees from New Hampshire and Maine traveled to the University of New Hampshire (UNH) for the Fall 2021 Kickoff. Faculty and trainees had the opportunity to meet in person, participate in team-building activities at The Browne Center for Innovative Learning (UNH's outdoor educational center), and gather the following day for the Leadership Boost, a core LEND activity

Getting and Keeping Iowa ON-TRAC for Health
