Innovative Trainings in Deaf-Blindness (SD UCEDD)

Children who have deaf-blindness miss out on opportunities for learning that other children receive incidentally or naturally as those without sensory impairment have access to the many sights and sounds from their environment. These missed opportunities can result in a sense of isolation from others and problems in communication skill development, concept formation, and overall learning. In the school setting deaf-blindness is considered a disability of access to the visual and auditory information provided in educational environments.

Talk with Pediatric Dental Students (NY UCEDD/LEND)

Lisa Latten, Family Advocacy Fellow at SCDD/LEND in Rochester NY recently spoke to Pediatric Dental students at University of Rochester Eastman Dental Center about the importance of including families in treatment plans. Lisa is the parent of a child with autism, and a Family Navigator at the Kirch Developmental Center at SCDD.

Gilson and DePoy Discuss Branding and Designing Disability at Designable 2016 (Maine UCEDD)

Stephen Gilson, Ph.D., and Elizabeth DePoy, Ph.D., University of Maine Professors of Interdisciplinary Disability Studies and Social Work, recently presented, "Diversivate: Branding and Designing Disability" at the inaugural Designable 2016 event in Kings Cross, London. The one-day session was sponsored by Rufus Leonard and Lloyds Banking Group.

AUCD Leadership Academy

Application Deadline: March 2

The Association of University Centers on Disabilities (AUCD) in partnership with the Center for Leadership in Disability at Georgia State University (GSU) is pleased to announce that it is accepting applications for the inaugural AUCD LEADERSHIP ACADEMY. The academy will be held on the downtown GSU campus in Atlanta, Georgia on June 25-30, 2017.

Health Care Transitions Research Network (HCT-RN) Updates

The Health Care Transitions Research Network (HCT-RN) for Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Other Developmental Disabilities was funded to support the creation of an interdisciplinary, multicenter research forum for scientific collaboration and infrastructure-building with a focus on research designed to improve health care transitions and promote an optimal transition to adulthood (including physical, psychosocial, educational, and vocational outcomes) among youth and young adults with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Since April 2016, our network has been actively engaged in the following research and practice improvement efforts related to the transition to adulthood of youth with ASD.

Rose F Kennedy UCEDD at Montefiore Partners with Bronx Developmental Disabilities Council for 13 Annual Health Services Conference

The Rose F Kennedy UCEDD (NY) at Montefiore partnered with the Bronx Developmental Disabilities Council for its 13th Annual Health Services Conference on November 18, 2016, entitled Physical and Behavioral Health Care for Persons with Developmental Disabilities. For years the RFK UCEDD has worked collaboratively with the Council, an association of parents, advocates and professionals that is advisory to the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene and the New York State Office for People with Developmental Disabilities.

Continuing the National Conversations on MTSS/RtI (LA UCEDD)

The Human Development Center UCEDD hosted the second annual two-day institute on RtI/MTSS with sessions focusing on behavior (PBIS), literacy, legal issues, and RtI/MTSS development, implementation, and sustainability.

First Annual USC UCEDD Community Education Conference

The USC UCEDD hosted it's first annual community education conference at The California Endowment in Downtown Los Angeles. This one-of-a-kind conference offered 18 sessions focusing on the needs of transitional age youth (ages 14-25) with co-occurring developmental disabilities and mental health issues. Over 180 participants from across the state of California attended the event.

HANDS in Autism Model in Practice: Intensive Weeklong Training for School Personnel & Community Providers (IN UCEDD)

An intensive training that focuses on providing hands-on experience and coaching in a simulated community & home environment. While the program includes traditional instructional methods such as lectures and discussion, the emphasis of training is incorporating interactive and hands-on application to foster increased participant knowledge and skill related to the process of making and supporting appropriate programming decisions for individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and other neurodevelopmental and behavioral disorders.

Kentucky Peer Support Network Project Fosters Friendship and Inclusion for Students with Disabilities (KY UCEDD)

For students with disabilities, it can sometimes be difficult to engage with their peers, both socially as well as academically. The Kentucky Peer Support Network Project aims to assist in connecting these students with their peers through two initiatives: Peer Support Arrangements and Peer Networks. Both efforts are being piloted in Kentucky schools today, and work in tandem to lay the groundwork for genuine friendships among all students who participate.

'Camp Yes And' for Teens on the Autism Spectrum Doubling its Impact in 2016 (IN UCEDD)

At 'Camp Yes And,' teens and teachers learn improv as a way to develop social communication skills and transform teaching and learning. The camp is designed to support verbal teens (ages 13-18) on the autism spectrum, or those with a similar diagnosis, who would benefit from support around building social communication skills.

First Certified People Planning Together (PTP) Trainers in Texas! (TX UCEDD)

Shelbi Davenport and Justin Deleon both valedictorians from their prospective PATHS program classes are candidates to become the first People Planning Together (PPT) certified trainers in Texas. The People Planning Together curriculum was developed by The Learning Community for Person Centered Practices, an International organization that provides certification programs in an effort to offer training to people with a broad range of support needs. The Institute on Person Centered Practices which is a collaborative partnership between the Center on Disability and Development at Texas A&M University and the Center on Disability Studies at The University of Texas is providing the Mentor services and supports to training Justin and Shelbi. The Institute is a regional affiliate of The Learning Community that provides training for professionals, educators, managed care organizations, providers of services, family members and people with disabilities. PPT is tailored specifically to support people with disabilities to develop person centered plans.

People On the Go (MD UCEDD)

People On the Go is Maryland's self-advocacy group of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities around the state who advocate for change. People On the Go members have come together for years to ensure that the voices of persons with disabilities influence services, policies, and practices. They are also engaged in a number of training projects at the Maryland Center for Developmental Disabilities at Kennedy Krieger Institute through funding from both the Maryland Developmental Disabilities Council and the Maryland Developmental Disabilities Administration (DDA) at the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.

Iowa UCEDD Partners with State Agencies on Recidivism Reduction Initiative

Iowa is one of five states that received a $3 million grant from the U.S. Department of Justice as part of their Second Chance Act Comprehensive Statewide Adult Recidivism Reduction Program. The grant has several areas of focus all centered around the goal of reducing recidivism through systems improvement work.
