Identifying Autism in Rwanda
In rural Africa, people with autism and other disabilities are stigmatized and routinely hidden indoors. This summer, the MN UCEDD trained community health workers in Rwanda on identifying the signs of autism in children and on principles for addressing the needs of people with disabilities in rural areas.

Peer Support and Research Engagement for Transition Age Young Adults with IDD Resources
Informed by community members, including young people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), the REACH Lab and Institute on Disabilities at Temple University developed free and easy-to-access resources about how peer support can help with successful transition and research.

Prevalence: Extending ICI's Research
For years, researchers at the MN UCEDD have estimated autism prevalence among Minnesota school children. Now the researchers are also estimating the prevalence of cerebral palsy, spina bifida, and muscular dystrophy.

Nugent Appointed to National Disability Rights Network Board of Directors
Austin Nugent has built bridges between many different parts of the disability community, and she's a Disability Program Administrator at HDI, has been named an At-Large member for the National Disability Rights Network's (NDRN) Board of Directors. That means that she'll help provide oversight to an organization that protects and advocates for people with all sorts of disabilities nationwide, focusing on ensuring that people's rights are protected.

OHSU Institute on Development and Disability UCEDD Expands Impact of Sexual Health Education
The UCEDD at OHSU has implemented The Friendships and Dating Program, created by the University of Alaska Anchorage Center for Human Development, in Oregon for the past three years. With its growing success, the FDP has received a grant extension and will continue for another year.

Turner Appointed to Kentucky Employment First Council by Governor Beshear
In 2020, Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear signed an executive order to create the Kentucky Employment First Council, which helps people with disabilities find meaningful employment. Morgan Turner, HDI Project Assistant, has accepted a position as Vice Chair on that council.

AUCD's Public Policy Committee typically meets monthly on the second Tuesday of the month at 4:00 pm ET. The Policy Committee is created by the Board of Directors to support the mission, vision, and values of AUCD by supporting AUCD's efforts to advance policies and practices that improve lives of people with disabilities. We welcome any person affiliated with a University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities, Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental and Related Disabilities Program, or an Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Research Center to join.

Making an impact: the Delaware UCEDD's Spectrum Scholars
Spectrum Scholars, a college-to-career program for autistic students that's administered by the University of Delaware's Center for Disabilities Studies, has turned out its first graduates. Andrew Martin graduated in May with a bachelor's degree in Applied Molecular Biology & Biotechnology and in June began work as a biotechnician at SDIX, an immuno-solutions company specializing in large-scale antibody production. Melissa Gatti graduated with a bachelor's degree in Computer Science and is continuing her studies in an accelerated master's program.

Research Opportunity-University of Pittsburgh
The REAACT Program, is currently recruiting for our new EDI-Self-Report (EDI-SR) study. The purpose of this new research study is to create a questionnaire known as the EDI-Self-Report (EDI-SR). This project is funded by the Eunice Shriver National Institute of Child Health & Human Development (NICHD). The EDI-SR was designed in partnership with autistic individuals to measure emotional experiences in autistic teens and adults and teens and adults with other intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD).
