11/01/2022

If you find yourself with free time before or after the AUCD 2022 Conference, consider visiting one of Liz's favorite places in DC. Liz Weintraub is Senior Advocacy Specialist at AUCD and the host of Tuesday's with Liz. Read on for a list of her recommendations!

Smithsonian Museums

Air & Space Museums

There are two different buildings for the National Air and Space Museums. One is in Virginia near Dulles Airport and the other on the National Mall in downtown DC. This a great place to visit if you are interested in space. For more information on this museum, visit their website at https://airandspace.si.edu

The Hirshhorn

Liz’s favorite art museum is the Hirshhorn. If art is your thing, you’ll want to visit while you’re in DC. For more information on this museum, visit their website at https://hirshhorn.si.edu

The American History Museum

If you are into history, the American History Museum is a great place to visit. For more information on this museum, visit their website at https://americanhistory.si.edu

The National Zoo

If you are interested in visiting a zoo, the National Zoo is one of the best in the country. To get there, you will need to take an Uber, Lyft, or the Metro Red Line. For more information about the Zoo, visit their website at https://nationalzoo.si.edu/visit

Presidential History

Visit the Washington, Lincoln, Jefferson and Franklin Delano Roosevelt (FDR) memorials. The Monuments are to remember four of our Presidents. They all are on the National Mall. The monuments are great places to visit when you’re out on the town and not at the Conference.

  • Washington Monument - You’ll need to get tickets to go to the top of the Washington monument and information can be found at www.nps.gov/wamo/planyourvisit/fees.htm
  • Teddy Roosevelt Island - A great place to walk is Teddy Roosevelt Island. He was one of our Presidents. Learn more at www.nps.gov/this/index.htm
  • Arlington National Cemetery - You can visit the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and President Kennedy’s tomb. Learn more at www.arlingtoncemetery.mil/#/
  • Mount Vernon - This is where our first President, George Washington, lived. If you’re interested in Washington, go visit his moment as well. Learn more at www.mountvernon.org

Restaurants

Ben’s Chili Bowl

The restaurant has been around for over 60 years, and many civil rights activists, including former President Obama, have visited. Plus, the chili is so good! Learn more at https://benschilibowl.com/

City Tap (Penn Quarter location)

This restaurant is casual and serves American-style food. I recommend the cheeseburger! www.citytap.com

Walking and Nature

If you like walking and nature, visit the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal (C&O). It’s perfect for a fall run or walk. Learn more at www.nps.gov/choh
