African American Conference on Disabilities - June 2023

The Arizona Center for Disability Law (ACDL) and its partners are excited to announce the 12th Annual African American Conference on Disabilities (AACD) will return in person for 2023. The AACD is the premier comprehensive disability conference in the United States that addresses the intersection between race and disability. The conference examines avenues for self-advocacy to ensure the effective provision of services, resources, and enforcement of civil rights in the African American and disability communities.

Join the Project ECHO Orientation to learn more about the ECHO model and how you can incorporate it into your work as a UCEDD (University Center of Excellence in Developmental Disabilities) or LEND (Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental Disabilities) program (or partner organization). Partners at the Wyoming Institute for Disabilities and the Center for Human Development at the University of Alaska Anchorage will share how they are implementing ECHO.

Fostering Self-Advocacy and Choice: An Interdisciplinary Approach for Children and Adolescents who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing

The Mailman Center for Child Development Innovation and Connection Conference will bring experts together to discuss methods that members of an interdisciplinary team, including audiologists, teachers, speech and language pathologists and parents, may use to facilitate the development of self-advocacy skills in children who are deaf or hard of hearing. Specific tools and strategies to support the application of self-advocacy skills across settings (i.e. clinical, educational, social) will be presented.

2021 Nisonger Institute

The Nisonger Center will be hosting it's annual Nisonger Institute on Scarcity of Medical Resources: Racial and Disability Equity on Friday, May 21st. Disparities in health care for people who have disabilities and for people of color was and is a common experience in our society. The Covid-19 pandemic and social unrest of 2020 sharpened our awareness of these disparities, particularly at the intersection of race and disability. This diverse panel will discuss policy and practice issues impacting scarcity of medical resources.

Using Innovative and Alternative Approaches to De-Escalating Individuals in Crisis Situations

A mobile mental health clinic will discuss strategies for working with individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities and disadvantaged and underserved populations who are experiencing a crisis situation. The webinar will focus on alternatives to police involvement, promoting client-centered communications, scene safety, de-escalation strategies, rapport building, and the role of self in crisis intervention.
