The Spectrum of Developmental DisabilitiesXXXVII: The Intersection of Chronic Disease and Neurodevelopmental Disabilities

A century of medical advances and public health improvements have dramatically altered the epidemiology of child health. Mortality rates for many pediatric conditions such as acute infectious diseases, prematurity, congenital heart disease, and cystic fibrosis have significantly declined. At the same time, the number of children with developmental, behavioral, and mental health conditions has increased. Chronic medical disease in children is often associated with neurodevelopmental disorders but the developmental aspects are overshadowed by the chronic disease diagnosis.
