AIR-P Presents: Addressing Reproductive Health and Obstetrics/Gynecology Health Care in Autistic Adults

Dr. Jennifer Ames from the AIR-P Gender, Sexuality, and Reproductive Health Research Node, will describe ongoing research examining reproductive health and obstetrics/gynecology health care gaps for autistic people, inclusive of female, transgender, and gender-diverse identities. The presentation will focus on topics such OB/GYN clinic visits, cervical cancer screenings, and use of hormonal contraception, with particular attention to differences across sociodemographic characteristics. Future work investigating obstetric care quality and pregnancy experiences will also be discussed.

Sexuality in Education Settings for Students with Intellectual & Developmental Disabilities

People with disabilities want friendships and relationships as much as anyone else. Unfortunately, there is a lack of appropriate education out there to support safe and healthy relationships. The rate of sexual assault is 7 times higher for individuals with intellectual disabilities than for those without. The Sexual Health SIG is hosting Katie Thune from Mad Hatter Wellness and the author of Sexuality for All Abilities to talk about how we can work together to lower that statistic by supporting the sexual health for this population through conversations, education and awareness.

Importance of Sexual Health for Individuals with IDD

Unfortunately, conversations related to sexual health are often not fully addressed or are pushed aside because of fear, lack of comfort with the topic, or lack of information. The SHEIDD Project: Building Community Capacity to Support the Sexual Health of Youth Experiencing I/DD

Multnomah County, located in Oregon and includes the Portland Metro Area, developed the Sexual Health Equity for Individuals with Intellectual/Developmental Disabilities (SHEIDD) project in collaboration with several partners including the UCEDD at Oregon Health & Science University. The SHEIDD builds community capacity to provide holistic sexual health education and support to young people (age 14-21) experiencing I/DD so they can make informed decisions, stay safe, and experience healthy relationships.

A Webinar from AUCD's Sexual Health Special Interest Group (SIG)

The purpose of the Sexual Health special interest group (SIG) is to connect people in the AUCD network to each other, and to resources about disability and sexuality. This webinar will introduce the Sexual Health SIG webpage, and highlight several resources from within the network, including: videos (Illinois UCEDD); a resource collection (Wyoming UCEDD); and a library portal (Alaska UCEDD). We will also introduce two upcoming surveys: Sex Talk for Self-Advocates; and Sexual Health Projects in the UCEDD Network.
