The Role of Cultural Diversity in Mentoring

Mentoring is fundamental to growth and success. Therefore, it is incumbent for mentors to have the ability to discuss challenges faced by culturally diverse individuals and, ultimately, have a repertoire of mentoring strategies to develop talents and skills in mentees from underrepresented backgrounds in LEND programs. This webinar will present mentoring theories so mentors will have a basic understanding of the mentoring process and provide strategies that promote communication and trust between mentor and mentee.

2020 LEND Directors Meeting

Meeting Description: The 2020 LEND Directors Meeting was held virtually from August 3-4 on Zoom. It was an opportunity for leaders in the LEND network (LEND Directors, Associate Directors, Training Directors, ITAC and MCHB staff, etc.) to identify new and emerging technical assistance needs, share information and best practices, engage in MCHB strategic planning, and facilitate meaningful collaboration.

This workshop will introduce LEND pediatric audiology trainees to the various challenges associated with effectively serving children with hearing loss (including those with additional disabilities) and their families. Social Media: An Essential Tool in the Democratization of Knowledge Dissemination and Engagement

Social media has a track record of spreading misinformation, yet it can also be one of the most democratic resources we have. The open-access format can reach many in the disability community and enable their voices to be heard, which mainstream media cannot do. The webinar will take a practical approach, highlighting how social media can amplify the voices and knowledge of our community for broader dissemination and engagement.

The Autism Friendly Initiative at Boston Medical Center: Improving the Healthcare Experience for Patients with Autism

This webinar will introduce participants to the work of the Autism Friendly Initiative, and to strategies of care optimization that are tailorable to any kind of healthcare practice. At the end of this webinar, participants will understand more about the specific challenges that face patients with ASD when seeking healthcare and will feel more prepared in determining how to address those challenges at their respective practices.

Learning to Face Fears from Home: Unexpected Benefits and Discoveries

The purpose of this webinar will be to describe an evidence-based, manualized group cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) program for youth with ASD and anxiety, called Facing Your Fears (FYF). Following a brief description of FYF, we will discuss specific ways that FYF has been adapted for virtual delivery, including successes and challenges. Presenters include clinicians who co-facilitate the FYF virtual groups, as well as parent of a teen with ASD and anxiety who participated in the FYF groups.

Caregiver Coaching through Telehealth: Benefits, Challenges, and Opportunities

We will provide a discussion of caregiver coaching strategies over telehealth using two different Naturalistic Developmental Behavioral Interventions (NDBIs) and consider options for multiple formats (synchronous and asynchronous). Benefits and challenges to using telehealth technology for caregiver coaching will be explored. A parent of a young child with autism who participated in coaching, both in-person and through telehealth, will share her experiences.
