This webinar discussed the UCEDDs' role in community integration and introduced a new toolkit developed by AUCD that highlights the UCEDDs' specific functions in this area.

The 2012 Science of Eliminating Health Disparities Summit is an HHS-wide endeavor involving a broad spectrum of the federal government that seeks to advance activities to eliminate health disparities. The agenda will build on the momentum of the 2008 Summit and the increased interest of federal agencies to demonstrate their commitment towards improving the health of all Americans. The National Service Inclusion Project is excited to announce that registration for the 2012 National Disability Inclusion Leadership Institute is officially OPEN! The 2012 National Disability Leadership Institute convenes leaders from national service programs, State Service Commissions, State Education Agencies, state and national nonprofit organizations, federal agencies and disability organizations whose missions include the meaningful inclusion of individuals with disabilities.

Research demonstrates that cultural and social capital are important levers in both transition education and the pursuit of equity across diverse groups of people. In this presentation, specific types of cultural and social capital relevant to special education was identified, their potential to impact positive postschool outcomes explained, and the implications for research and practice that take into consideration culture and diversity as complex, interactional variables was discussed.

Emergency preparedness is an essential part of living for any individual or family. For those with intellectual disabilities, their families, or those providing support, however, emergency preparedness may require more specific plans of support. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has a number of resources to prepare and support individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities before, during, and after natural disasters. Of key importance is the implementation of self-determination practices in this area. One example of this implementation is the ?Feeling Safe, Being Safe? training curriculum through which individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities have become advocates and trainers in emergency preparedness.
