Webinar Description:

The Autism SIG invites you to a roundtable discussion on leadership and mentorship. The Autism SIG co-chairs will facilitate a recap of the webinar series and provide a perspective on the importance of mentorship and leadership for the autistic community. Members of the Autism SIG will have the chance to speak in breakout rooms on various topics decided by the SIG.

Presenters:

Gyasi Burks-AbbottGyasi Burks-Abbott is a writer, public speaker, and autism self-advocate. He graduated from Macalester College in St. Paul, MN, with a BA in English and psychology, and he has an M.S. in Library and Information Science from Simmons University in Boston. Gyasi has been both a LEND Fellow at Boston Children’s Hospital and a UCEDD Fellow at UMass Boston’s Institute for Community Inclusion. He’s collaborated on articles for the Developmental Disabilities Network Journal and contributed to the Association of University Centers on Disabilities Policy Blog. Currently, Gyasi serves on the boards and committees of several autism and disability organizations, including Advocates for Autism of Massachusetts, the Massachusetts Developmental Disabilities Council, and the Permanent Commission on the Status of Persons with Disabilities. Recently, Gyasi published a book about his life called My Mother’s Apprentice: An Autistic’s Rites of Passage. He lives in Bedford, Massachusetts.

Dr. Anjali RaoDr. Anjali Rao is a Pediatrician in Chicago, IL. She practiced general pediatrics for Northwestern/Lurie Children’s for nearly 20 years, then pivoted to sub-specialize in Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics (DBP) at the University of Chicago. She received her Bachelor of Science from Duke University and attended Emory University for medical school.  Dr. Rao has practiced inpatient and outpatient pediatrics. She was the Physician Lead for the NIH-funded Developmental Diagnostic Clinic at the Northwestern Center for Speech, Language, and Learning. She earned her Leadership in Neurodevelopmental Disabilities certification. She is Co-Chair of the AUCD Autism Special Interest Group.  She served as the Vice-Chair of the First Steps Initiative through the IL Chapter of the AAP and is an active member of their speakers Bureau. She is a member of the AAP Section of Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics and the Council on School Health. She is an active member of the Society of Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics and was chosen to participate as a Research Symposium Scholar in 2022. She has advocated in Congress as a member of the FDA Task Force through Doctors for America.  She participates in the Behavior Health Integration Collaborative through the AMA. She is a medical educator and mentor.  Her research interests involve building models to increase capacity building and care delivery for children with neurodevelopmental differences.
