APRIL 2023: AUTISM ACCEPTANCE MONTH

April 2023: Autism Acceptance Month

Saturday, April 1, 2023- Sunday, April 30, 2023
Location: Virtual

Autism Acceptance Month Language

AUCD, our members, and partners have used the month of April as an opportunity to share information relating to Autism Spectrum (AS). This month has traditionally been framed as Autism Awareness Month. AUCD shifted its language from "Awareness" to "Acceptance" in 2019.

This shift reflects input from autistic individuals and other community leaders as well as our commitment to sharing how AUCD network members are advancing support, research, evidence-based interventions, inclusiveness, and advocacy for the human and civil rights of all autistic people. While greater public awareness of autism exists today, autistic individuals still face numerous barriers, including but not limited to access to accessible healthcare services, social and support services, job opportunities, and meaningful leadership positions.

AUCD's Autism Acceptance Month aims to foster greater acceptance, respect, and celebration of the unique strengths and perspectives of autistic individuals and to help create a more inclusive society. We hope you will consider joining us in messaging that goes beyond awareness and promotes full acceptance and appreciation of the many contributions of autistic people.

Sponsored by AUCD's Autism SIG and ITAC, AUCD is hosting webinars focused on leadership, mentorship, and Autism Spectrum.

Why Leadership and Mentorship?

Mentorship and leadership development are critical to breaking down barriers to inclusion and promoting acceptance of autistic people in all aspects of society. By providing education, resources, and support, autistic individuals can develop the skills and confidence needed to navigate complex systems and become effective advocates for themselves and their communities. During Autism Acceptance Month, we will focus on mentorship and leadership development of autistic individuals and their support systems.

Why AUCD?

Leaders across the AUCD network are engaged in research, education, and services that seek to improve education, resources, and support for autistic individuals and their support systems. We recognize that this work must involve true partnerships between autistic leaders and self-advocates, families and support systems, educators, researchers, service providers, assistive technology developers, and others to enact change in the delivery of and access to health care services.
