Webinar Description:

This is the third of a four-part webinar series that breaks down the eight different types of family involvement detailed in the LEND Family Discipline Network (LFDN)'s 2019 white paper titled "Fabric not Fringe: Weaving Family Involvement throughout Training and Practice for Professionals and Advocates Working with Individuals with Disabilities and Special Health Care Needs." In this webinar, two family professionals will discuss the definition, needs, benefits, resources, and strategies associated with different types of family involvement: board members, research participants, consultants, and family-focused topics.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Describe the history of family involvement as a training practice and its importance in providing interdisciplinary care.
  2. Define the needs and benefits of the following types of family involvement: board members, research participants, and consultants on family-focused topics.
  3. Identify strategies for implementation and ways to evaluate the following types of family involvement: board members, research participants, and consultants on family-focused topics.

Julieta P. Hernandez, PhD, LCSW, IMH-E®

Julieta is an Assistant Professor of Clinical Pediatrics at the University of Miami Mailman Center for Child Development, an Infant Mental Health Mentor-Clinical, and a Training and Technical Assistance (TTA) specialist for the National Center on Health, Behavioral Health, and Safety. Dr. Hernandez brings over 18 years of clinical, supervisory, and training experience on infant/early childhood mental health, trauma, challenging behaviors and caregiver wellness. She provides mental health services to children with developmental disabilities, or those at risk for developmental disabilities, due to environmental trauma. Dr. Hernandez practices Child Parent Psychotherapy and TF-CBT to help children and families recover from trauma; and researches the risk and resilience aspects of the child-caregiver relationships. She has provided TA on the mental health aspects of disaster preparedness, response, and recovery to HS/EHS programs serving young children and families in Puerto Rico and US VI St. Croix.

Wanda Felty

Wanda Felty is the Community Leadership and Advocacy Coordinator for the Center for Learning and Leadership, Oklahoma's UCEDD, and a Core Faculty member in the Family Discipline for OKLEND. Wanda was the first long-term trainee in Oklahoma for the Family Discipline in 2005. Wanda is also mom to three adult daughters and her middle daughter is diagnosed with developmental disabilities.
