Location: Sheraton Kansas City Hotel at Crown Center

This workshop will introduce LEND pediatric audiology trainees to the various challenges associated with effectively serving deaf/hard of hearing children (including those with additional disabilities) from clinical practice and systems perspectives. It is a unique, interactive learning opportunity that brings together trainees and faculty from across the country. The focus will be on shared decision making and journeying with families during transitions.

Registration deadline: Monday, March 2 at 11:59pm ET.  There is no fee to register.

Who Should Attend?

This workshop is intended for LEND pediatric audiology trainees who are planning to attend the 2020 Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI) Meeting. LEND faculty are encouraged to register and will be expected to facilitate small group discussion and activities.

Learning Objectives

Trainees who attend this session will be able to:
  1. Describe the role of audiologists in initiating and engaging in shared decision making.
  2. Identify and list practical tools and strategies for shared decision making.
  3. Discuss the importance of authentic partnership with D/HH individuals and family members.
  4. Hear different perspectives related to navigating transitions.

Location

The workshop will take place from 2:00pm - 5:00pm CT on Sunday, March 8, 2020 at the Sheraton Kansas City Hotel at Crown Center in Kansas City, MO, site of the EHDI annual meeting. A specific room location, once assigned, will be e-mailed to all registrants in advance of the workshop.

Homework Assignment and Materials

Prior to the workshop, all trainees must:

  1. Read "Shared Decision Making - The Pinnacle of Patient-Centered Care" (Barry and Edgman-Levitan, 2012).
  2. Read "Parental Decision-Making and Deaf Children: A Systematic Literature Review" (Porter et al., 2018).
  3. Select one of the following options: (a) Reflect on a clinical interaction that you've had (or observed) with a child/family going through a transition, or (b) Conduct an in-person, phone, or e-mail interview with a professional from any discipline who is intimately involved in helping D/HH children and their families navigate transitions, whether in a clinical or systems-focused role.

Detailed homework assignment instructions and required readings can be found in the "Homework Assignment" .pdf document on the top right of this page, where you can also find an updated agenda.  These documents will be e-mailed to all registered participants multiple times before the workshop.
