About this Webinar

The APHA Disability Section will be hosting a webinar featuring three outstanding presenters! The purpose of these webinars is to promote learning and to provide an opportunity for students and Disability Section members to share their research throughout the year.

This webinar will focus on Social Influences of Health and Wellbeing among Individuals with Functional Impairments. The moderator of this webinar is Erica Twardzik, MS. Erica is a doctoral candidate at the University of Michigan, where she works to advance health equity for adults with disabilities through research, education, and leadership.

Presenters

• Leah Abrams just completed her second year in the Health Services Organization and Policy PhD program at the University of Michigan School of Public Health. Her background is in epidemiology and sociology, and current research interests include social determinants of population health, racial/ethnic health equity, and the aging population. Leah has been a member of APHA for about three years and is excited to present a work in progress regarding depression -- the leading cause of disability worldwide -- in older adults in the U.S.
• Elizabeth Koss is a PhD student in Health and Rehabilitation Sciences, with an emphasis in epidemiology at The Ohio State University. Elizabeth's research interests focus on population-based analyses of sexual and reproductive health outcomes and effective sexual health education for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD). Additionally, Elizabeth has been providing sexual health education for individuals with I/DD in the community and school settings over the past year. Elizabeth is a licensed occupational therapist practicing in a pediatric outpatient facility and is currently working towards candidacy within her PhD program. Elizabeth has been an APHA member for two years and is interested in maintaining and increasing involvement within the disability section in the future.
• Robbie Dembo is a third-year PhD student in social policy at Brandeis University with a concentration in child, youth, and family policy. His research focuses on the health and welfare of people with developmental disabilities and their family members over the life course. Robbie is a research assistant with the Lurie Institute for Disability Policy, a senior research analyst with NORC at the University of Chicago, and a 2018-2019 Social Networks and Health fellow at Duke University."
