Location: Raleigh, NC

The Ninth Summer Institute on Theology and Disability is taking place this year at the Edenton Street United Methodist Church in Raleigh, June 11-14, hosted by the church in collaboration with Duke Divinity School.

The four-day Institute begins with a Community Day, Monday, June 11, a day designed to include clergy, laity, professionals, advocates, families, and any interested who cannot afford the time or expenses for the full four days.  (The fee is $50) The keynoter for Community Day is Timothy Shriver, CEO of Special Olympics.  It will also feature a panel of Summer Institute faculty and religious leaders on current issues and trends in inclusive faith supports, afternoon workshops led by the faculty and others, and a panel featuring creative, inclusive faith-based programs in mid North Carolina. (See the accompanying Community Day flier).

The three days which follow feature two plenary speakers each day, a symposium for Ph.D. students working at the intersections of theology and disability, a strand on mental health and faith, and about 30 workshops led by people from across North America and other parts of the world.  Plenary keynote speakers this year include Tawara Goode, PhD, Dilshad Ali, Shane Clifton PhD, Rabbi Julia Watts Belser, PhD, and Erika Hagensen. Devan Stahl, PhD., will present the 2018 Jean Vanier Emerging Scholar Lecture.
