Accessing Social Media

Thursday, July 17, 2014
9:00amET - 4:00pmET
Location: Washington, DC

The FCC's Accessibility & Innovation (A&I) Initiative will hold an event on Thursday, July 17, 2014. The topic of discussion will be "Accessing Social Media". This event will be developed in partnership with the Department of Labor's Office of Disability Employment Policy (ODEP) and the National Council on Disability (NCD). It is intended to facilitate an exchange of information about making social media tools and content accessible to people with disabilities.

The goal of the event is to heighten awareness among technology developers and media producers so that they are inspired to increase the level of social media accessibility. Additionally, this event could inspire federal agencies to become more diligent in choosing social media tools and in authoring social media content that reflect the best in accessibility. This event can also encourage employers to utilize social media to recruit employees and to create and exploit accessible social media websites and apps as job performance tools to help employees with disabilities. Finally, consumers could benefit from this event by learning about tools and techniques that enable them to participate more effectively in social media networks.

Following the panel of discussions, demonstrations of accessible technology solutions related to the topic will be held in the FCC's Technology Experience Center located in the same building.

The agenda and list of panelists will be released at a later date.
