Flipping the Classroom

Thursday, February 28, 2013
3:00pmET - 4:00pmET
Location: webinar

Flip teaching,or a flipped classroom, is a form of blended learning which encompasses any use of technology to leverage the learning in a classroom, so a teacher can spend more time interacting with students instead of lecturing. (source: wikipedia)

Patricia S. Lynch, PhD, will present an overview of what flipping a classroom is and how it has worked for her. Dr. Lynch, who is with the Center on Disability and Development at Texas A&M University and a professor at Texas A&M University in the College of Education and Human Development, focuses on Career Development Education and has ‘flipped' college courses. Dr. Lynch will show her current classroom structure and discuss how the students perform using the flipped structure. Dr. Lynch will also discuss how ‘flipping' might be applicable to community education and beyond.

This presentation is sponsored by the National Community Educators Directors' Council (NCEDC) as a learning opportunity for the Association of University Centers on Disabilities (AUCD).

  1. Download/update java if needed. This takes less than a minute and it pivotal. Click here. It is highly likely that you already have it on your computer but updating is recommended to ensure you have the latest version.
  2. Give your self at least 5 minutes to open the program at the time of the session if you have already downloaded java. Give yourself 10 minutes if you need some prep time.
  3. Preparation
    1. If you would like to review the entire 7 minute orientation for attendees click here.
    2. If you have never used a webinar tool before I strongly suggest viewing # 6, 7, 8 and 12 of this overview. These selected pieces will take you less than 2 minutes to view. The entire orientation takes only 7 minutes and is very easy to navigate to specific topics.

  4. Tips and guidelines
    1. You will be muted during the presentation unless you click on the talk button in the top left corner. After you click on the microphone, speak, then Unclick the microphone so that others can have an opportunity to speak as well.
    2. You can raise your hand see (#7 in the above orientation) or send chat messages (see #12 in the above orientation) at any time during the presentation.
    3. When the presentation is over and during Q&A time you please 'raise your hand' if you have comments or questions. 'Raised Hands' are placed in a queue and will be responded to in that order. Use the same procedure as above to speak - click the microphone in the top left corner, then UNclick when you have finished speaking.
  5. Any handouts or presentations will be sent to you after the session.
