About the Webinar

This presentation provided an overview of dental care for individuals with special health care needs (pediatric to adult).  The presentation included information about unique aspects of providing dental care to individuals with special health care needs, barriers to access to care, the dental home model, as well as a presentation on dental training resources/modules.  This presentation included an overview of the National Maternal and Child Oral Health Resource Center.

Speakers

Anupama Rao Tate, DMD is the Director of Oral Health Advocacy and Research at the Department of Pediatric Dentistry in the Goldberg Center for Community Pediatric Health at Children's National Medical Center. After graduating from Harvard School of Dental Medicine, Dr. Tate completed her residency training in pediatric dentistry at CNMC and returned as faculty member after a year in private practice. In addition to her many duties at CNMC, she provides lectures to interdisciplinary groups of trainees on oral health care for children with special needs. She served as Department Chair for Pediatric Dentistry at CNMC for 6 years.

Dr. Harold L. Kleinert is currently the Executive Director of the Human Development Institute - University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities and Professor, Department of Rehabilitation Sciences, College of Health Sciences, University of Kentucky. He has directed a broad range of federally funded demonstration and research projects, especially in the area of education of children and youth with severe disabilities. Dr. Kleinert directed the development of the Preservice Health Training Modules to teach medical, dental, nursing, and physician assistant students how to provide high quality care to patients with developmental disabilities.  These modules are part of the Electronic Tool Kit of Preservice Curricular Materials subsequently developed in collaboration with the Office of Disability, Office of Disability Employment Policy (ODEP) and AUCD.

Katrina Holt, MPH, MS, RD is the director for the National Maternal and Child Oral Health Resource Center at Georgetown University, which is supported by the federal Maternal and Child Health Bureau. In this role, she works to enhance the quality of oral health services for pregnant women, infants, children, and adolescents, especially those from disadvantaged and underserved populations. Prior to joining Georgetown University, Katrina worked in a variety of settings, including local health departments, prenatal clinics, school-based clinics, refugee clinics, and other community programs. She is very committed to community service and has served as a volunteer for Maryland Special Olympics for the past 20 years.
